I'm not a wild conspiracy theorist, but I'm also cynical enough to strongly suspect that there was no "strategic overreach" here. There's a pretty strong possibility that U.S. foreign policy and military matters have been run by politicians acting on behalf of foreign interests for quite some time now.
This is a perfectly rational explanation for why nobody has ever clearly explained what exactly this so-called "War on Terror" is supposed to achieve, and how the hell this country could possibly expend all of these resources to fight Islamic terrorists even while insisting that "Islam is a religion of peace" and that the radical Wahabbists who run Saudi Arabia are somehow exempt from any scrutiny in this "war."

Thanks so much. I hate to disappoint you, but if you talk to just about anyone who has worked in U.S. intelligence you'll find that Israel isn't an "ally" of this country at all. They are their own nation with their own agenda and their own interests, and they don't much care if their interests aren't the same as ours.
Read up on the Jonathan Pollard case, for example . . . or the well-documented track record of the Israeli government over the years in selling U.S. military technology to countries that would never be permitted to buy such things from the U.S. (China, for example).
