Senate Republicans have succeeded in blocking a measure designed to reduce wage disparities between men and women.
The 58-41 vote to take up the Paycheck Fairness Act fell short of the 60 needed to overcome GOP opposition.
Civil rights groups, labor leaders and the Obama administration all supported the bill, which would make employers prove that any disparities in wages are job-related and not sex-based.

Great news, but can they hold the line? When do they recess for the year anyway?
There, fixed it...
GREAT !
Sn. Michael Bennett, 0’s surrogate in CO, just responded to my ‘not only NO, but he11 NO’ comment.
By informing me he’d signed on as a co-sponsor to this debacle.
Gotta love it
I predict Reid/Pelosi will fart around with this and other loser laws and won’t have time to enact renewal of any of the Bush tax cuts before 1/1/2011 resulting in massive tax increases for everybody that works before the new Congress fixes it.
Never once did I hear them mention “The qualifications of the individual”.
Please don’t try to amend that media’s well defined template. Everything is the GOP’s fault and if we are lucky those fine, upstanding, and morally superior Democrats can save the day...country...planet....etc.

What is needed is a real “Pay Equity Act.” Simply put, it should be required that no government employee shall be compensated, including benefits, greater than the average private sector employee for comparable work.
Incidentally, I notice there were 98 Senators voting. As for the Senators who were to be seated immediately (Manchin, Coons, and Kirk), have any of the three been seated yet? And who were the two who did not vote?
Agreed, although it’s hard to actually prove such a thing.
Excellent. Moreover, just filibuster EVERYTHING that isn’t a GOP agenda item in its own right. Lame ducks need no exercise, save for walking their duck kiesters out the congressional doors.
Republicans and business groups said the bill would expose employers to more litigation by removing limits on punitive and compensatory damage awards.
Ah yes, another lawyer inspired full employment welfare bill. This is one of the "Show Bills" the libs are so fond of trying to pass to show how heartless the Republicans truely are./S/
Sorry, but anyone that is unable to write their name in the snow should be paid less. Everyone knows that. As it has always been, as it should be.
Merit before gender...........what DO you know!
Depends. Who is old and or incapacitated? Could be: Lautenberg, Akaka or Johnson.
BLS actually already compiles the wage data. Determining comparable work is the hard part. However, Congress seems to have no trouble with the concept when requiring the private sector to prove it for supposed gender inequality.
Every Democrat and Independent voted in favor except Ben Nelson. Every Republican against except Lisa Murkowski (not voting)
For a cloture vote, not voting is the same as voting 'no'. With 59 seats (57 Democrats/ 1 Independent/ 1 Communist), they needed at least one crossover Republican. They got none. Well done, GOP.
