Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- In response to a video of a California man's dispute with airport security officials, the Transportation Security Administration said Monday it tries to be sensitive to individuals, but everyone getting on a flight must be screened.
The video, in which software engineer John Tyner refuses an X-ray scan at the San Diego, California, airport, has sparked a debate over screening procedures.

Well, many DUers were calling the initial screening established post 9-11 the beginning of a slippery slope. Were they correct, or is there some reasonable intermediate delineation that you can offer? Surely you’re not advocating for NO security.
If you agree that some security is necessary, then you have to agree that some sort of meaningful bureaucratic structure has to be established, too? Either governmental or corporate. Something that handles everyone, or one that is based on profiling (ergo, database). Instant slippery slope, regardless of the level decided upon.
No screening whatsoever is LESS safe in your book? A no-screening policy would allow non-terrorists (who are likely to outnumber terrorists on any flight) to fly armed, and thus be more likely to be able to quickly stop a hijacking attempt. A no-screening policy could have averted the 911 hijackings altogether! You think that the screening makes us MORE safe?
You really think that Americans would avoid the no screening option? I would choose the no-screening option myself, and for my family as well. Mandatory “security” screening only started in the USA in 1973, and it didn’t really stop 911, did it? The 1973 answer of instituting universal “security” screening was, in fact, a failure, as evinced by 911.
The passengers on every plane that hit its target on 911 had gone through “security” and had been inculcated with the idea that it was the job of “security” to keep them safe. The only plane that didn’t hit its target was UAL93, whose passengers managed to throw off those messages we’ve all been taught since 1973, and fought back to take control of the plane. How much easier would it have been for the passengers if some had been armed? To put it another way: how much more difficult would it have been for the hijackers if they didn’t know which, or how many, of the passengers had been armed?
Screening isn’t just expensive, time consuming, humiliating, and pointless. It’s also dangerous, because it deprives good people of both the tools, and of the mindset, needed to fight back when needed. That lack of tools and fighting mindset are exactly why there are two vacant holes in the ground where the world trade center once stood. Extending the screening further is a good way to increase the chances that there will be more vacant holes where other buildings once stood.

We need more trust. Here's a news flash, every one of us will die some day. We shouldn't treat people like criminals if they've given us no reason to treat 'em as such. The system currently in place assumes everyone is guilty until proven innocent. If this was the policy of a private business or entity, fine. One could take their business elsewhere. but it's not a private business, it's a public government business, and one of the wrong type. This does nothing to deter terrorism and just causes problems and an annoyance for the people who are innocent. We'll never 100% be rid of problems or those who wish to do stupid stuff and harm others. We shouldn't try a catch all system. Life is too short for these types of games, but we're gonna be forced to play 'em anyway.
And yes, they were correct. Even metal detectors and the strip off the shoes, belts, glasses, etc. is also ridiculous.
Are you going to pilot the no-screened planes yourself? Because that is what it is going to take.

The rule of law is now suspended at the the airports and these personalities are committing what would be (is) a crime anywhere else in the country. How long before it's decided it would be a good idea to expand this program to stop, at random, you in your vehicle. After all, didn't a terrorist try to use his vehicle to set off a massive explosion in NYC? They search the vehicle and then you - search you everywhere. Say one word and you're arrested.
And when do they decide they can implement this in the schools?

I have family that have gone through the worst of the fighting in Afghanistan - he and his unit have made a name for themselves - one of them is the first living soldier to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.
