KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- A former University of Tennessee student convicted of hacking into Sarah Palin's e-mail account during the 2008 campaign was sentenced to one year in prison.
David Kernell, who was convicted in April of two counts related to hacking the former Alaska governor's personal e-mail account, was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release, CNN reported Friday.
Prosecutors told the Knoxville, Tenn., court Kernell accessed Palin's e-mail account in 2008, when she was running as the Republican nominee for vice president, by resetting her password and posted screenshots containing personal information to a public Web site.
The information posted to the Web site included family photos, e-mail addresses and at least one Palin relative's cellphone number.
Kernell was not immediately taken into custody and U.S. District Judge Thomas Phillips ruled he will be able to self-report to the Bureau of Federal Prisons

Good. One more LIBTARD off the streets.
Good. The defense on this was weak. The sentence us about right.
This libtard would have gotten life in prison if he hacked a Dems e-mail.
Oddly enough, if the kid had immediately confessed and apologized, I think he woulda got probation- and saved a lot of money on lawyers’ fee.
David Kernell, the Tennessee student convicted of hacking into Sarah Palins personal e-mail account, has asked the court to forgo a prison sentence and give him probation for his crimes. Kernell, 22, was convicted earlier this year of misdemeanor computer intrusion and a felony count of obstruction of justice. The jury found him not guilty of a wire-fraud charge and hung on a fourth charge for identity theft, after four days of deliberating.
Even better, it was a felony conviction. One less legal vote from a liberal.
Wow, his lt. col. mother must be so proud....but not so proud that she hired not one but two lawyers to defend the indefensible.
I think I see the boy’s problem here....
His mother and dad must be real proud, and probably are. Because this little weasel wasted a lot of taxpayer monies by denying the whole crime, one year is not enough.
He’s gonna make a lovely prison b!#ch.
From the Knoxville News-Sentinal:
Year + day for David Kernell in Palin e-mail case
Instead, he ordered a prison term of one year and a day but recommended the U.S. Bureau of Prisons allow Kernell to serve that sentence at the Midway Rehabilitation Center on Magnolia Avenue. The BOP isn't bound by the recommendation, but the agency typically honors such judicial requests.
The judge said Kernell, who is attending Pellissippi State Community College, can continue his studies as he serves his sentence.
Isn't that special.
He isn’t going to prison.
KNOXVILLE - A federal judge today ordered a former University of Tennessee student who snooped through Sarah Palin’s private e-mail account in 2008 to serve a year and a day for his crime and recommended that his time be served at a Knoxville halfway house.
And the ACORN vote fraud perps get community service??!! I don’t get it.
“David Kernell, third from left”
Oh, is THAT him? I never would’ve guessed he wasn’t an 80 year old black woman. Thanks a lot, news.
Then I’m glad he didn’t confess and apologize. At that level of stupidity, it’s fitting that he squandered his inheritance. I posted a thread on this yesterday, and got some good responses including this one:
Fun fact: in federal court, a sentence of a year and a day is shorter than a sentence of one year.
Parole was abolished in federal court years ago, but there is still time off for good behavior, not to exceed 15% of the sentence. But entitlement to “good time,” as it is called, kicks in only after serving a year. So someone who is sentenced to a year serves 365 days, but someone sentenced to a year and a day can serve as little as 311 days, assuming they commit no violations of prison rules.

He was sentenced to a year and a day so that he could qualify for ‘good time’. This judge is sickening and needs to be replaced.
Of course not. What was I thinking.
Democrat "dirty tricks" type criminals are instant celebrities.
