These guys divied up political power in Indiana after WWII.
DC Stephenson, who'd earlier (1920s) ruled the state through the Ku Klux Klan continued on in his role as boogyman, and you'd find ALL politicians still denouncing him well into the 1960s.
Most present day Indiana voters are blissfully unaware of politics there half a century ago, but Luger isn't. He knows the fine line to walk to stay in power and stay out of jail. When he first came to office Indiana politicians also had to have an Eastern Bloc foreign policy, and they'd best speak highly of the bravery of the Hungarian people ~ 'cause there are one heck of a lot of voters there who think of themselves as descendants of early Hungarians who dug the canals (pre 1850s guys).
BTW, although nominally a Republican, lugar falls into the Henry F. Schricker wing ~ and most of them are Democrats (kind of).
well I will certainly vote to get Lugar out. In six years Dan Coates will be in my sights also, unless he has had a sudden change of heart
