Richard Montgomery High School officials and Rockville police are preparing for a demonstration Saturday afternoon by Westboro Baptist Church in protest of the school's drama production of "The Laramie Project," a played surrounding the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student.
Westboro announced on its website, www.godhatesfags.com, on Oct. 30 that members would protest at the Rockville school between 1:15 and 2 p.m. Saturday.
Founded by Fred Phelps and based in Topeka, Kan., the church is known for picketing the funerals of American soldiers and other anti-homosexual protests.
Attempts to reach the church for confirmation and comment on Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.
"It is our understanding that there maybe a rally held during a non-instructional day near Richard Montgomery High School," Principal Nelson McLeod wrote in an e-mail to The Gazette Tuesday. "Based on that information, a security plan was developed with (Montgomery County Public Schools) officials and the City of Rockville Police Department."
Rockville City Police Chief Terrance N. Treschuk said police officers would monitor the demonstration Saturday, but added that church members are within their civil right to protest at the school, located at 250 Richard Montgomery Drive.
Denise Saladyga, the co-artistic director of the school's drama club, said she learned of the protest after a student found it online a week and a half ago.
In 1998, Shepard, a 21-year-old college student at the University of Wyoming, was severely beaten, tied to a fence and left to die by Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney in Laramie, Wyo.

But more importantly, why in the hell is a school putting on this kind of agitprop?
The play presented because of it’s sensitivity, tolerance and diversity? I’m not so sure I’m against WBC on this one.

Worst part is he was just robbed, not because he was gay. The “gay panic” was just an attempted defense by the criminals.
Westboro is filled with nutjobs, but a high school has no business doing this kind of play. I doubt there will be many non-homos who will be counterprotesting Westboro in this case.
I would side with anyone before siding with the WBC. They are a tool of Lucifer led by a homosexual pedophile.
I saw a few of these inbred morons at a soldiers funeral.
They weere completely blocked from the view of the mourners and family by Patriots and true Chrsitians.
They were basically pathetic and left very quickly..
Free Speech run amok. They even have children holding signs. Extrememly disturbing...
I’m no fan of Fred Phelps and his band of nutjob lawyers but I’d love to see how the Monkey County Socialists deal with this.
I’m really surprised Phelps is still alive. I imagine he has so many people ticked off at him.

Yes, and Westboro has every right to protest. Nevertheless, both are stupid decisions.
