A friend of mine’s son got into drugs, and apparently he stole stuff from relatives’ houses and houses of friends of the family to pay for his drugs. So this is apparently not all that uncommon with criminals.

We have seen it. It gets to a point that the drug is their only friend. They'll rip off friends and relatives with no hesitation at all.

Most burglaries are by people or friends of people who have been in the house.
It's a familiar place and defined as a safe hit.
