The NFL believes that a new stadium could bring the Falcons a superbowl. How about a winning team instead?

This really kills me - they pulled this stunt in Cleveland, Ohio in the late 1980's. They hoodwinked the county taxpayers into funding a new baseball stadium despite the old one being structurally sound and functional. They also used taxpayer funds to build a new downtown arena despite there being a PRIVATELY-FUNDED 21,000 seat arena in nearby Richfield, Ohio that served as a basketball and hockey arena for years and did so without any taxpayer money. The city of Cleveland basically forced the Richfield colosium to close, and did so with money stolen from taxpayers.
Then, to top all that, they bent the law to allow them to later use the same taxpayer funds to build a new football stadium, this time without voter approval. They decided that it was OK to misappropriate funds that were designated for the baseball stadium to build a football stadium so that the new Browns could have a place to play (and lose repeatedly).
My take - with the enormous sums of money that these teams have to pay out to players, they can easily afford to build their own playpens rather than have the taxpayers financially raped to build them. The money should come SOLELY from the teams and any donors that feel the need to help finance another useless sports facility.

On a side note, Harrah’s (the casino chain that coerced their employees to vote for Harry Reid in the recent election) is currently pushing a local initiative to get an arena built on their property in Las Vegas. It would be paid for by an increase in Nevada taxes and an increase in tourist taxes. They are presenting the plan under the guise of it it being a way to create jobs and to attract a National Basketball Association team, and/or a National Hockey League team, but they don't want to pay for it themselves. They want others to pick up the tab while they profit off of it.

but they don't want to pay for it themselves. They want others to pick up the tab while they profit off of it. EXACTLY the case in every other taxpayer funded sorts venue. The taxpayers pay and the sports teams and associated businesses profit at the expense of the taxpayers.

College sports are pretty corrupt, too. Just like the former Soviet block olympic athletes, they are often professionals masquerading as amateurs.

If it’s so worthwhile, let the Falcon’s owners do it!

The way the Broncos are playing this year, maybe I can demand my money back that was stolen for the new stadium here in Denver!

These projects are never finished on budget and I always wonder how much cash is passed under the table for a pat on the back. Convention centers are another pie in the sky schemes. The new Nascar hall of fame in Charlotte N.C. is not meeting “estimated income projections”...

I always wonder how much cash is passed under the table for a pat on the back. Campaign contributions and permanent catered box seats for the "leaders" who squandered the hard earned taxpayers' dollars, and of course a great big chunk of free capital for uber rich limousine liberal Arthur Blank who never met a hard left liberal condidate that he didn't want to donate to.
The new Nascar hall of fame in Charlotte N.C. is not meeting estimated income projections...
Gee what a surprise. < /sarcasm>
