Man Convicted of Inciting Social Unrest (Because His Son Drank Tainted Milk)

A FATHER who campaigned for compensation for his five-year-old son and other 300,000 sickened by tainted milk in 2008 was sentenced to two and a half years in jail for inciting social disorder yesterday in Beijing.

Zhao Lianhai, a 38-year-old former employee of a newspaper under China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, was accused of organizing illegal gatherings under the pretext of seeking justice for victims in the melamine-laced milk scandal in cities such as Shijiazhuang of Hebei Province and Daxing District in Beijing during 2008 and 2009, Modern Express reported today.

Zhao was also accused of leading crowds to shout slogans in front of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau over the rape of a woman petitioner on August 4, last year.

Zhao's lawyer Li Fangping said they would appeal as the sentence was "too hash." Zhao's wife Li Xuemei said the sentence was "unacceptable."

Zhao opened a website calling for more compensation for affected families, which attracted hundreds of parents whose children were diagnosed with kidney stones after drinking melamine-laced milk made by 22 Chinese dairy companies. At least six babies died and more than 50,000 were hospitalized in 2008.

Considering that the penalty for some of those who adulterated the milk with melamine was death, and this guy publicized the problem, I don’t understand the logic behind the sentence.

The logic is “don’t you dare call attention to Government corruption and incompetence”
