LOS ANGELES The Pentagon and NASA experts have determined that a billowing contrail seen streaking into the skies above Southern California was likely caused by an airliner and not a missile.
The phenomenon recorded Monday evening by a TV news helicopter created a media sensation and a vapor trail of commentary across the Internet about the possibility of a secret missile firing. But the military insisted it knew of no rockets launched in the area.
Defense Department spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said Wednesday that officials were satisfied it was an airplane contrail distorted by camera angle, winds and other environmental factors including a setting sun.
Military experts studied the video and talked to all government agencies that might have been involved in a missile launch and none reported having launched one, Lapan said.

Until same time, same place yesterday?
Or last year off CA:

I guess in that case there was no internet mass-hysteria over it and thus no need to "disclose" a flight number.
A missile is launched 30 miles from a city of ten million - and two people notice?
Smell test fail from the get-go.
No, it wasn’t says Robert Ellwood former Under Secretary of Defense !!!!!

But we now have the calming and official proclamation..."likely caused by an airliner and not a missile" in reassuring tones, no doubt.
Likely? A potential missile launch just off the coast of CA and we get LIKELY?
Hey, how about some tapes from the ATC radar? What, not done modifying those yet? Come on, it's been three days, that is plenty of time for at least a couple of photoshopped stills showing "nothing." It would have never taken this long for the BUSH administration to doctor up a few photos of the radar!
Ok, back to reality...
Let's look at a few aspects of the big picture from an outside point of view.
If YOU were going to produce a show of force (motive comes later) where would you fire off a missile with little chance of hitting something unacceptable to the other side?
Over one of THEIR firing ranges. In this instance, one of ours.
And if it is just a contrail why are their not hundreds of other mistaken contrails every year? Was their something special about the weather that day? Did the FAA designate a new corridor or altitude? No? Is their a new fuel mix being used by our commercial fleet? Perhaps. For that ONE aircraft making that ONE flight.
Yea, ok. It gave more importance to fact that we are not seeing this on a daily basis. Heck, we dont see this kind of response on a yearly basis Of course, the day isnt over yet...
Are there different technologies and designs used by non-U.S. militaries? Almost certainly. However . . .
We get likely caused by an airliner and not a missile" in reassuring tones.
Expanding the view
Given the level of pissed off of damn near the entire planet against the u.S and specifically the fed pretty much wrecking the dollar and causing similar damage to monetary systems for all developed nations I am surprised they did not fly the damn thing over the u.S and drop it into Chesapeake Bay!
Little bammy on Monday defended the 600,000,000,000 f*** **u to the holders of u.S. dollars just before the G20 where he intended to get a measure that would cap current account balances at 4 percent of gross domestic product, which is a knee-capper for CHINA and a numerical target that had already been rejected by China, Germany, Japan and others. We are also seeing Russia and China, backed up by the rest of the G20, insisting they are consulted before the fed "passes go" and fires up the printing presses." I can imagain what a response THAT got from "THE ONE."
It looks like we got the "response." And the money-quote?
"Judging by the critical response of emerging market governments to QE, the likelihood of a ceasefire in the currency war is slim," RBC Capital markets said in a report published on Monday.
As for the big mystery? Looks to me like a very real warning. The military and the FAA stood there flat-footed and slack-jawed for 48 hours stammering and not knowing what to say. One would think that with he resources of the entire United States military forces they could identify a commercial jet contrail in less than two days.
They did not.
Or release a single still shot of the ATC radar.
They did not.
Let that sink in. An apparent SLBM just off the coast of CA and we get 48 hours of no comment from folks that can see a hang glider with a few pounds of dope crossing the mexican border? I smell a big rat on that. SOMTHING was in the air at that time and location and FAA/Military are not admitting to what it was.
If it was an airliner we should have a recording of at least one ATC screen showing the correct aircraft. Three days later, nope.
Instead we get "There is no evidence (other than the video) to suggest that this is anything else other than a condensation trail from an aircraft," said the statement from Col. Dave Lapan, acting deputy assistant secretary of defense.
Really? "An aircraft?" They can't even commit to which aircraft? From the outfit that gave us "As stated yesterday, NORAD and USNORTHCOM determined that there was no threat to the U.S. homeland." in the same breath as "we don't know where it came from."
And we will NEVER hear a truthful confirmation from the deranged crew in DC. That is only going to be non-stop good job and A-Plus and the last administration and we didnt talk about our accomplishments and blah blah blah
Meanwhile the rest of the planet isnt buying their bull$hit. Going into the G20 with a nut-job sock-puppet like little bammy less that a week after the spanking with the rest of the planet pizzed off at the u.S. I would say yea, that would be a pretty good time for a show of force.
The current administration could EASLY get the u.S. into a really hot confrontation if it continues to wreck the economy. Kinda like when the rest of the heavy hitters are saying it to little bammie's face. Despite the propaganda the rest of the world really can read and they believe nothing little bammy and crew have to say. They also see the damage starting to occur in their OWN back yard.
Folks need to stand up and look around at the big picture. There are international events occurring that should be taken into account.
Or, we can contort an obvious video and a speechless government into "look at these other pretty pictures!"
Sorry, that is not good enough.

Still doesn’t seem right. If he had just slammed on his afterburners, I still wouldn’t expect a trail like that unless he had a serious engine problem.
My personal guess was that it was a high altitude weather rocket, doing something confidential. Since you couldn’t erect a gantry at Luke without everybody seeing it, it was probably relatively small.
I know that NASA has been keeping an eye on the thermosphere, which has been acting very odd of late, what with the long period of inactivity of the Sun. But a small rocket going that high would imply an advanced fuel or engine.
Again, all guesswork.
Let us know when you figure out my post is about our government can not handle the event of Monday and it's obvious consequences. Also, it is about examining the event from various aspects such as current international political and economic realities, not just pretty pictures of clouds.
In the meantime...

About as much as these... so just for you, enjoy.
