First California. Now they're shooting at Queens!
Two days after a mysterious vapor trail appeared at sundown off the Los Angeles coast -- triggering fears of an enemy missile attack -- a stunning replay occurred in the sky over Far Rockaway.
A passer-by snapped a photo of a billowing streak yesterday afternoon at around 5 p.m.
Like Monday's scare on the West Coast, it looked like the exhaust from a just-launched missile.
What caused the contrail visible from the Rockaways also is not known.

Not necessarily. Depends on atmospheric conditions; winds aloft, temperature, etc.
Granted, but the point being water vapor disperses (and evaporates) more quickly, regardless of atmospheric conditions than the more dense and complex matter that makes up the plume/smoke which will not evaporate.
Once again you’re mistaken. I’ve seen contrails at altitude hang around a lot longer than it takes for the shuttle plume to dissipate.

You would have to observe the space shuttle plume and airplane contrails under the same atmospheric conditions and duration to say I am mistaken.
Not so. Since the California sighting was of a daily scheduled airline flight incoming from Hawaii, (AWE808) you can see the same phenomenon after sunset on any clear evening...
Some folks' tinfoil hats must be glued to their heads...
