“It is a big missile”

Sez Robert Ellsworth, the former Deputy Secretary of Defense;

but what would he know

In the video, anyone can clearly see the missile streaking into the sky ...

He goes on to say:

“It could be a test firing of an underwater missile from a submarine...”

By the way, the several reporters in the video matter of factly state over and over

Missile Launch Lights up the Sky over LA

Missile launch.

Not a condensation trail.

Fire coming out the back lights up the sky, not water condensing.

US?

or Chinese?

Or crazy NORKs ?

It's much easier to explain the broadening of the contrail by pointing out that Earth's atmosphere at different altitudes has different pressures.

That means at lower altitudes there's more air. At higher altitudes there is less air.

When you are looking due West you are looking through several miles of thicker atmosphere, several more miles of less thicker atmosphere and several more miles of thinner atmosphere. I think the distance involved here is 35 to 50 miles (whatever the limits of visibility might be).

The contrail's altitude is pretty much the same at all points visible.

The part closest to us is seen through the least amount of air. Over 45degrees it's seen through maybe 20 miles of air. Way over at 90 degrees it's maybe 35 miles of air, with different pressures.

This gives you a lens ~ a very large lens ~ enough to make the "base" of that contrail look several times as big as it really is.

This same thing happens with a Full Moon or the Rising Sun.

There might even be a little bit of wind scattering, but this is a short time frame ~ how fast is a plane flying when it's still a long way from its landing at PHX? Maybe 400 MPH? So, there's 50 miles, at most, that we can see, so that's 4 minutes ~ that contrail is not going to blow apart that fast in any wind. The answer is we are looking at a magnified image of a contrail, with different levels of magnification depending on the distance of the contrail from us.

Plus, as the Sun sets the amount of white light is reduced and red light increased, which adds to the magnification apparent in the image we end up seeing.

A vertical contrail. Planes fly straight upwards, right?

Not necessarily.

Just don’t ascribe any of those strange thoughts anywhere near my direction, please. I take offense to it.

The shoe doesn't appear to fit in your case.... It was really more of a general comment.

I am from the government and I am here to tell you it's a commercial airliner. Go back to your normal lives now. [/sarc]

Some excellent pro-contrail posts from you and others on this thread.

I have to say: the video is compelling and appears to show a missile or boosted payload. I think you would find it intriguing.

And I agree with you. That’s a missile - or conceivably a solid-fuel rocket-assisted aircraft.

Mark 41 vertical-launch aircraft:

Yes, I watched that video of the former deputy SecDef. He’s trying to figure out what type of missle it is....”It’s not a Tomahawk”

“It’s a big missle”

He says the Navy should weigh in and tell us what type of missle it was.

Just another KOOK. They must have hid the gin and tonic before he went on air. LMAO

The "large" (not giant) rabbits actually exist. They live in swampy areas along rivers and streams. I have one that regularly visits my lawn to eat pears in season. Sometimes he eats these very large dinner plate size mushrooms that pop up (I have three species of them ~ in rings).

We also have several nexts of giant bumblebees ~ they live in the ground, or in special enclosures I made for them years ago.

You don't get the wildlife unless you set the table!

It doesn't "appear" to fit. Well thank you.

It’s obvoius that someone has ‘accidently’ misfired a missle from a sub, and now they’re trying to figure out how to explain it.

Sub thought to be in the area was first with women in crew, naw that couldn't be right.

Ipse dixit truth is unassailable on the very definition upon which such truth is predicated: it is because it is said to be so, therefor it is so. Sort of like Obambalamadingdong's citizenship? And then what? Since its proclaimed to be, then everybody can state that it is so because everbyody says that it is so

I suppose, if some dude can be found to be an unqualified to present expert testimony in such matters, and the matter is deemed to be such that an appeal to authority MUST be made (as there is no other way to independently assess the truth), then the premise can be impeached with predjudice and any conclusions predicated upon the premise would be unsound, but not necessaryily invalid, IF the conlusion can NOT be false should the premise speculatively be true.

The question becomes: is this a situation where it is absolutely necessary where an appeal to authority is demanded. If so, then the credentials of some dude are paramount.

So, there's 50 miles,

As it was shot from a helicopter, the range would be closer to 300 miles.

If you but assume for a moment that it is a missile, and the launch took place just 5 miles away, look at the size of the smoke cloud at the base.

Now, imagine how big it is at the horizon which we can't actually see in these pictures.

That'd indicate a rocket larger than anything ever launched. After all, the smoke would be maybe 2 to 3 miles wide at ground level!

This is being shot from LA so I'm discounting the normal background haze, dust and pollution. No doubt if they'd flown out over the ocean 20 miles or so they'd gotten into clear air.

So 400 miles ~ but if we had the altitude of the helicopter we could easily compute the distance to the horizon (which I'm not going to bother with ~ this is obviously NOT the Blue UFO that attacked Centreville VA last week.)
