OAKLAND -- City Councilwoman Jean Quan won the final tally Wednesday in Oakland's ranked-choice mayoral election, capping a dramatic eight days in which she came from behind and surged to victory because she had more second- and third-place votes than rival Don Perata.
When first-place votes were initially counted after the Nov. 2 election, Quan had just 24 percent, and Perata had 35 percent. But Quan proved to be a more popular second and third choice among supporters of the other eight candidates, and in the end, she had 51 percent to Perata's 49 percent.
Alameda County Registrar of Voters Dave Macdonald said Wednesday night that although a handful of ballots may remain to be counted, they would not alter the results.
The reversal of fortune means Quan will be the first woman and first Asian American to be mayor of Oakland when she succeeds Ron Dellums in January. It also marks a stunning defeat for Perata, once the most powerful Democrat in California politics as the state Senate president.

Oakland’s ranked-choice mayoral election,——
Is this something that former Oakland Mayor and new California Governor Brown dreamed up?
Sounds more like the NFL draft than an election.
One reason I dislike ranked choice or any of the other schemes moonbats come up with. Once again people get their second or third choice in charge.
When faced with ranked choice, make all three or five or whatever choices the person you want.
Lefties try “alternative methods” when they are sure the most leftie one running can’t win top choice in a democratic vote.
A very good election system.

Debra J. Saunders - Token Conservative
November 8, 2010As my colleague Chip Johnson wrote, even though Don Perata won the most votes in the Oakland mayor's race, Alameda County's new ranked-voting system could give the race to Jean Quan. Call it a case of ED -- electoral dysfunction.
As a city council member, Quan has been squishy on crime -- pushing for "problem-solving" police officers, pushing for a $360-a-year parcel tax, then deciding to oppose it -- and disregarding a police disperal order during July 8 protests after the involuntary manslaughter conviction of former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle after he was tried for shooting and killing an unarmed Oscar Grant.
It never ceases to amaze me how Bay Area politicians involved in unmitigated disasters end up getting ahead. Quan, you may recall, was a member of the Oakland school board who voted in favor of the infamous 1996 "ebonics" resolution that called for the district to instruct "African-American children both in their primary language and in English." . . .
The ol’ teflon must be wearing thin.. lol
Oakland, like the rest of the state, will need to collapse completely before any chance to save them will emerge..
Ogreland, Kookifornia! Suit yourselves morons! Enjoy the steep decline ride downwards!
I don’t think Oakland has elected a non-moonbat Mayor in over 40 years.
I would, hardly, call Debra J. Saunders a conservative. Nonetheless, she’s a long-time Oakland resident. And, inasmuch as, they were willing to accord her the designation “conservative,” she should have been more outspoken about what ails Oakland! But the malaise, that is liberalism, is so ingrained in the psyche of these people that they wouldn’t know right if they collided with it!
“We’re number 2 and 3! We’re number 2 and 3!”
We can all celebrate the end of Parata’s reign of terror over constituencies. Well, that is, unless Brown finds something to appoint him to.
I like Deb’s columns, for the most part. She, along with Scott Ostler and (when she writes) Ruthe Stein, are great writers.
Of course none of them compare to the true Chron greats like Herb Caen, Stan DeLaplane and Charlie McCabe...oh, I miss the good ol’ days of great Chron writers like those guys.

3. Thought they were in Mayberry.
4. Steppingstone to California Governorship.
(Which brings up the follow up question, why would anyone want to be Governor of California?)
