WASHINGTON -The Pentagon said Tuesday it did not know what created a vapor trail that crossed the skies off the Southern California coast and resembled a missile launch. Video posted on the CBS News website shows an object flying through the evening sky Monday that left a large contrail, or vapor trail. A news helicopter owned by KCBS, a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, shot the video. Pentagon officials were stumped by the event. "Nobody within the Department of Defense that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said. While the vapor cloud captured on video resembled that created by a rocket in flight, military officials said they didn't know of any launches in the area. Lapan said that "all indications" were that the Defense Department was not involved with the object. One expert called it an optical illusion. "It's an airplane that is heading toward the camera and the contrail is illuminated by the setting sun," said John Pike, director of the U.S.-based security analyst group globalsecurity.org. The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, issued a statement jointly with the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, saying that the contrail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile. It provided no details. "We can confirm that there is no threat to our nation," the statement said. "We will provide more information as it becomes available."

Who is is Unicus? Why are you quoting an ANONYMOUS BLOGGER and BLOG as gospel?
Yeas they are only problem is some of us refuse to play mushrooms
Polish crop duster.........
Yeah, that is how the MSM feels about the blogosphere.
Also, the side that is a cult is the "It WAS a missile!" group. I thought it was a missile at first. As I examined the evidence and looked up some of my old sources and went back to formula, it became OBVIOUS that it is nothing more than an airplane contrail.
It is no more a missile contrail than this is Mary:
>>Why are you quoting an ANONYMOUS BLOGGER and BLOG as gospel?<<
Where is your evidence that I am quoting it as gospel?
And Buckhead was an “anonymous poster” but he still brought Dan Rather down. Sometimes the information speaks for itself and the source is not all that relevant. And sometimes the information qualifies the source.
Why do you think so many people trust the National Enquirer more than the NYT now? :)
The “It wasn’t a missile” cult is quoting an ANONYMOUS Blogger and a BIRD PHOTOGRAPHER as their experts?
Aren’t you even a bit curious about their identities and their qualifications?
Are you suggesting that his identity is more relevant than the logic and supporting evidence for his arguments?
Buckhead went public with his identity.
Unicus won’t.
The threat level has not been raised according to my daughter. She says that the Navy would know before the general public.
Aren’t you even curious about Unicus’s identity? Not even a little?
I dunno who Unicus is, but he offers a good explanation with good photographic evidence. Plus everybody here on FR has seen jets and contrails before, and most have seen and can grasp how a jet flying toward you at high altitude on a flat trajectory can appear to be a missile flying straight up from a location on the ground. One doesn't need to be an aeronautics engineer or rocket scientist.
There are enough real threats in the world from the Chinese, Islamicists, Iranians, North Koreans, etc., for conservatives to not be chasing down contrails that look like SLBM launches.
So that contrail should be on a regular schedule, present every day at the same time when wx conditions are favorable at that altitude. Which is most the time.
>>Buckhead went public with his identity.
Unicus wont.<<
Not relevant. Unicus is merely one of many sources I discovered when investigating this. Again, my original thoughts were that it was, in fact, a missile. It really did not take much investigation to realize that it looked an awful lot like a contrail. Eventually it became obvious.
Case closed.
And it has nothing to do with Unicus. I just thought there was some good info there.
I have no reason to be curious about that. Why would I be? It's totally irrelevant. Even if I were interested, he's given a good explanation on his site for why he chooses to remain anonymous.
Not so on this contrail, it is clearly from a single propulsion unit.
Also, this contrail is significantly more dense and opaque like the exhaust from a solid propellant rocket; pure water vapor contrails from a jet engine are more transparent and breakup at distance.
This object is moving very fast, there isn't enough lag time for the change in trajectory of the contrail to be explained by cross winds. However, a gimbled rocket motor makes exactly those kinds of trajectory corrections, particularly during the boost phase.
Also, planes fly parallel to the earth surface. If so, the object should be getting larger as the object approaches. But its not, its getting smaller because it's going up, not flying level.
Finally, I post on a pilot's blogsite and the dozen or so posters universally agree that it is not an aircraft contrail, too dense.
>>Arent you even curious about Unicuss identity? Not even a little?<<
I’m not. I AM curious if the information on the site is accurate though. I think it is. At least the parts I read.
Unicus is not the only source.
Photographic evidence, but not video evidence from Unicus it appears.
Why the lack of curiosity into Unicus’s background and qualifications? Is it a man? Is it a woman? Is it a monkey?
It’s the same lack of curiosity into Obama’s background and qualifications that got us into the mess we’re into today.
>>So that contrail should be on a regular schedule, present every day at the same time when wx conditions are favorable at that altitude. Which is most the time.<<
Yep. See post 61.
