WASHINGTON -The Pentagon said Tuesday it did not know what created a vapor trail that crossed the skies off the Southern California coast and resembled a missile launch. Video posted on the CBS News website shows an object flying through the evening sky Monday that left a large contrail, or vapor trail. A news helicopter owned by KCBS, a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, shot the video. Pentagon officials were stumped by the event. "Nobody within the Department of Defense that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said. While the vapor cloud captured on video resembled that created by a rocket in flight, military officials said they didn't know of any launches in the area. Lapan said that "all indications" were that the Defense Department was not involved with the object. One expert called it an optical illusion. "It's an airplane that is heading toward the camera and the contrail is illuminated by the setting sun," said John Pike, director of the U.S.-based security analyst group globalsecurity.org. The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, issued a statement jointly with the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, saying that the contrail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile. It provided no details. "We can confirm that there is no threat to our nation," the statement said. "We will provide more information as it becomes available."

More likely WON'T than can't.
It was the only plane off the coast at that time flying at 37,000 feet (Honolulu to Phoenix). Most of the other traffic around LA is taking off or landing so it’s at a much lower altitude where contrails couldn’t form.
Two days ago, I work near the area.
CRAP!!!! I was using page 53!!!
Ok, I’ll go do that now!
This is why we always visit in teams. ;)
I owe you one, bro’!
I notice there have been several posters misleaading people about the video.
It’s a missle plume from a sub-surface sea launch, and one can see the flame from the engine as it moves away from the camera.
Pictures taken by a news helecopter.
While Russia weighs in...
In Moscow, Major General Alexander Vladimirov, vice president of Russia’s board of military experts, told the Interfax news agency the television image “looks like the launch of a missile from a submarine.”
“Most likely we are talking about the launch of a Trident-2 ballistic missile from an Ohio submarine,” Vladimirov was quoted as saying.
“There is reason to believe this was an unsanctioned launch of a missile from a submarine. If this is so, then many questions arise about the condition of the U.S. armed forces,” he said.
Great, there goes Jupiter...
Seems like if it were a missile and not an airplane a bunch of videos would be appearing by now.
You noticed that too?
Just those guys over at the department of dis-information trying to placate us mushrooms.
Yeah red that as well....I would side with the Russian...lol
Rush just mentioned and he expressed confidence that it was not an aircraft contrail.
I don’t always agree with Rush. I’m actually disappointed in his stating his position that way. If I were in his shoes I would have at least said that it “appears” this is more than just an airplane contrail. Using the word “confidence” in the tin foil side was a mistake.
Question: Which one is the real ICBM? All eight!
If it were a contrail, that shape is only possible from a center line thrust aircraft. Problem with that theory is there are no centerline thrust aircraft used in the flight profile being touted as the “answer”. Only acft like 747, 757, 767, airbus 3XX, etc.
I guess what intrigues me and it may be as others offered , nothing unusual per se,, the bottom of the pic on the left above looks like a boost phase and luanch from a sub.. the 2nd stage kicks in causing the slight bump and then jaunt to the right and upwards.. any wind charts available for that timeframe? ;-)
I will admit it would be nice to have a time lapse web cam of that general direction ,, cuz ya know how some minds here are never really at rest, well, not for long when something looks a bit out of the ordinary
Why are you quoting an ANONYMOUS blogger and his/her blog as gospel?
Who is this Unicus you are quoting as an expert?
Does he or she have a real name?
What are his/her credentials?
Please tell us why this “Unicus” is the almighty expert and spokesperson for the “It wasn’t a Missile” cult.
