At least one Edmonton city councillor says the campaign makes a point, while a Conservative politician is saying the wording is all wrong.
A white person looking for an apartment to rent does not face similar challenges that an aboriginal person does, said Coun. Amarjeet Sohi, explaining what is meant by the phrase white privilege.
But Ryan Hastman, the federal Conservative candidate for the Edmonton-Strathcona, said hes concerned because the campaigns focus on white people is too narrow.
If we try to address these issues by singling out groups, it seems to be counterproductive, said Hastman, who posted some of his concerns on Twitter.
The City of Edmonton and 13 Edmonton organizations - including the Edmonton Police Service, Alberta Human Rights Commission and Edmonton Catholic Schools - are behind the Racism-Free Edmonton campaign.
The campaign is focused on identifying and resolving institutional barriers faced by aboriginal people and other racial groups in Edmonton, according to a City of Edmonton release.
The campaign aims to have 30,000 Edmontonians sign a scroll committing to defeating racism locally.
On the campaigns website, www.racismfreeedmonton.com, under the What can you do to stop racism heading, the first line reads acknowledge your white privilege.
White privilege refers to all the benefits we get just for being white. Most of us are aware of how racism hurts others, but were not aware of how it benefits us, the site reads.

The worst racists are leftists obsessed with others’ skin color.

I will not argue with this. But this is life. And when you try to force the issue, all that happens is that you breed resentment and make things far worse. If you know a prospective tenant may be a protected group, you try your best to keep away from them, because you know you won’t get a fair shake from the legal system if there is a problem.
What happened to treating people by the content of their character? Now we’re treating people by how they look and its assumed whites are privileged because of their appearance and so a white is automatically guilty of unconscious racism as a result of the circumstances of their birth. Liberalism wants to create an aristocracy of race - enforced by the state.
Only white people can be racist because they are the only ones with the “power”.
“If you know a prospective tenant may be a protected group, you try your best to keep away from them, because you know you wont get a fair shake from the legal system if there is a problem.”
The same holds true with employment; while larger companies are required to hire the proper number of tokens (since not doing so nowadays almost automatically results in a lawsuits for millions of dollars, as well as basically a court order to hire such people, including a VP of Diversity), smaller companies are much more homogenized: all white, all black, all Hispanic, all Asian. They are small enough to be able to defend their hiring, and will never end up in court.
I’ve received resumes from prospective employees, in which they highlight membership in things like “African Student Union”. We both know why they put it there, and it has the opposite effect of what was intended; to me it simply says: the “normal” employer-employee relationship doesn’t apply with this person, and any dissatisfaction with their services will result in us being forced to wait for them, at their leisure, to move on to a larger host...
The inability of the Union to deal with the freed slaves since 1865 has been an albatross around our neck for nearly a century and a half; I understand our unofficial policy seems to be just contracepting/aborting them out of existence, but these issues just drag on and on...

What the leftist goons are actually doing is teaching racism to these children. They do it all the time in the "black community."
The youth propaganda is the same as what the Nazis did and what the Communists do.
Any place where they want 30,000 to commit to defeating racism locally is not a place where anyone with visible jewelry or $5 in their pocket wants to be caught after dark; it probably is pretty nasty at noon as well.
I wonder how Canada feels now about serving as a refuge for escaped slaves...
Yes, we must face it. Being born black is a lifelong disability. Bullshit! Get off your pitty pot and live. We are all sacred creations of God the Father and are expected to live like it.
I didn’t invent that nonsense, its being taught in Universities everywhere and is prominent in govt circles.
Among those Brave New World utopian schemes is the consequence is risking losing my job if I say the wrong newly translated liberal code word for a minority group, no matter how inconsequential.
I have two words for liberals. I don't have to post them. You all know what they are.
Look at any nation on this earth and you will find that the peoples who actually founded and built those nations always have a head start compared to those who came much later. But it seems that only the nations founded by white people are intent upon making their children ashamed of their history and filled with guilt.
Hopefully a healthy portion of the population of Edmonton will ignore these self-loathing white nitwits.l
It's one thing to actively recognize the moral wrongs that one's predecessors have committed and to deliberately avoid committing them again.
It's another thing to actively recognize the moral wrongs that one's predecessors have committed and commit those very same moral wrongs again in the name of deliberately avoiding committing them again.
Sadly, the latter is what's actually happening.
It’s already here and has been for a long time.
In the early 1990’s, the Los Angeles Police Department required white male applicants to have a written score of 110%. The applicant had to be a veteran of the Gulf War....which was worth 10%.....and then have a perfect written score of 100%. Hispanic males and females, black males and females, and white females were allowed to have test scores in the 80’s and 90’s. When I told this to my cousin’s husband, who’s a police officer on Long Island, New York, he said, “Sounds like discrimination to me!”
The LAPD’s display ads in the Los Angeles Times of that era always showed Asian males in uniform, black males, black females, Hispanic males, Hispanic females, and white females, but NEVER white males.
Same thing with the U.S. Navy’s aviation officer programs in the 1980’s. They were only interested in me when they thought my last name was Hispanic....it’s of Italian extraction, and that wasn’t good enough. The Navy also classified as “Hispanic” anyone whose ancestors came from Spain or Portugal!
“White privilege” means that someone white worked their ass off in order to get where they are.
“What happened to treating people by the content of their character?”
You mean that crap spewed by MLK? It`s not crap, but libs consider it crap. They believe people should be treated by the color of their skin.
They should tell that to Jaycee Lee Dugard....
It`s amazing. If MLK was still alive today, libs would be calling him a Tom.
And all this “accomplishes” is to anger more people, make more excuses for underperformance, and make things much worse.
Sort of like voting for Obama because he was black. That really morphed into “hope” “unity” and “yes we can” and a “post racial society” didn’t it?
As Rush says, he’s the “MOST racial” Pres__ent
Leftists are pure evil. They spend so much time picking on helpless children while the activities of the real enemies of humanity are not only ignored but frequently supported.
Let’s just kill these vermin and be done with it.
