I don’t know the specifics of the case against Aziz. However, if they are as Hitchens describes them (his only crime being the supression of Malaki’s religious sect), then this smells and sounds like some political payback. And I would have to agree with Hitchens, lock him up and throw away the key but don’t hang him.

As someone who has dedicated nearly four years to serving in Iraq, I tend to listen to all points of view regardless of what I think of the person when contemplating the stability there. Some here may have nothing invested and would easy enough say “hang ‘em!”. Many of us others would rather not have what we have worked so hard to achieve f’d up by political revenge. If you just don’t care, say it. It is a free republic. Be proud to say that you want to see our work fail. Just don’t be surprised if someone attempts amateur dentistry on you.
As for the source, Hitchens probably understands more about the people in the middle east than you know about the people on your street. The GOI would be wise to listen.
