Another possibility - Chinese or Indians showing they can do SLBM launches, and they can do it from 35 miles off our own coast, and they can do it without being detected prior to launch. Were this a muslim group with this capability, the headline on Drudge would have been “Los Angeles Destroyed by Nuclear Missile Lauched off of US West Coast.”

Insofar as we have fast attack subs posted in the pacific and this is not far from CA, you can’t quite say that a chinee SLBM would not have been prior detected as to a launch platform. It is what they do, day in day out- they are sub killers. And never any comment on sub operations from COMSUBPAC or any Sub command, the silent service. So we may know quite a bit, or this is all an op of some type.
No I think they absolutely detected it. They just couldn't stop it.
The only thing that makes sense is if they were in something that we COULD detect - I don’t think there’s any law against them running their subs up to 35 miles out, but the fact that they fired off an ICBM was the “gotcha!” in the deal. So, they fire one off heading north west. Then the question is, do we have the ‘nads to sink the sub. We have to still know where it is. I mean, THEY FREAKING FIRED AN ICBM 35 MILES OFF OUR COAST! This is a bit reminiscent of the chinese sub that sat on the bottom till our flat top convoy came over and then surfaced right in the middle of all 30 ships or whatever, less than two miles from the carrier. Surprise~! Gotcha!
