I love NYC but I do not care for the Broadway shows and the garment district. I love NYC for all for its religious institutions (eat that, NYC lefties). In my neighborhood alone, we have a choice of several private schools. There are Catholic and Jewish schools and colleges.
Indeed, one thing I don’t quite understand is why do most Christians, who are from Middle America, send their kids to secular public schools instead of creating their own religious schools like the Jews and the Catholics?
Lots of them do. Most are fairly small and you might not notice them.
Unfortunately a great many Catholic Schools have closed because many Catholics are no longer willing to sacrifice the money necessary to send their children to a Catholic School.
In large part I blame the increased tax burden on the people of this country but I also blame the more materialist culture of America compared to that of 50 or 60 years ago.
I also blame New York for this rise of materialism. NY and California in many ways lead the culture of the US. Where those two states lead (through the popular media) the rest of the country follows.
But perhaps there is hope. Maybe the Tea Party is in a small way a bit of a rebellion against the Cultural Revolution that started in the sixties in NY and California and has devastated this countrys morals and culture.
“...send their kids to secular public schools instead of creating their own religious schools like the Jews and the Catholics?”
Huh? Harvard, Yale, Princeton, amongs others were established Christian institutions before Commies infiltrated the ranks.
And speaking of religious schools, let’s start with The Master’s College, Patrick Henry College, Dallas Theological Seminary, Bob Jones University, Moody College, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Westminster, Covenant College, LeTourneau, Biola, Azusa Pacific, Liberty University, and this is just a conservative listing.
Why? For the longest time, Protestant culture was/is the mainstream that was taught in public schools in the first place.
You only need alternate schooling if the mainstream variety doesn't teach what you want it to.
Nowadays, though, it's looking to be more and more necessary for Protestants as well.
Are you serious, ari? If so, you'll be happy to hear that there are Christian schools all over the country! (There are even a few in NYC). Also, many committed Christians, who can afford to do so, choose to homeschool their children in order to achieve the maximum benefit of academic excellence.
But, yes, Christian schools (most of which are also recognized as academically rigorous) can be found all over the country, for those who choose that option.
‘Indeed, one thing I don’t quite understand is why do most Christians, who are from Middle America, send their kids to secular public schools instead of creating their own religious schools like the Jews and the Catholics?’
The reason for this is simple. For most of US history the public schools were public, but not secular. They deliberately promoted a sort of generalized high church Protestantism. When I graduated high school 50 years ago, students in NY still recited a state written prayer every day. If you were Jewish or Catholic or low church Protestant and could raise the money, you built schools for your coreligionists.
Starting in the 1960’s the federal courts totally removed observances of religious faith from the public schools, leaving high church non-wealthy Protestants with no schools teaching religious ideas. At the same time the education departments produced unchurched new teachers.
The result is a public school system without prayers, but with drugs, sexual activity starting in elementary schools, and a student body without respect for their country, their teachers, or themselves.
UC Berkeley was originally started because the locals wanted a more conservative university than was offered at the time.
Too bad Berkeley transformed away from the original intent!
