Its often darkest just before its pitch black. But other times a dim ray of something resembling light can break through. With the voters sending a strong message that they want action on jobs, our new post-shellacking period could be a bit shinier than expected. Call it Pollyannaish, but Barack Obama, John Boehner, and Mitch McConnell might actually get some things done together on the economypro-growth Eisenhower Republican initiatives acceptable to both parties and pleasing to voters hungry for signs of cooperation. Whether or not these put many Americans to work, theyre worth a try. There could be a political upside: in the 90s, both Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich saw their approval ratings rise when they worked together on deficit reduction and welfare reform. Even super-partisans have to deliver when they hold power.
At first glance it looks as if Obamas extended hand has been met once again by a clenched fist from Republicans. Just as there was no honeymoon after the Obama inauguration in January 2009, the GOP wasted no time last week on post-election bipartisan niceties. On the day after Obamas conciliatory news conference, Speaker-in-waiting Boehner said the president was still in some denial about the election, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell only slightly qualified his now-famous pre-election insistence that the single most important thing we want to achieve is defeating the president in 2012.
McConnells latest brushback pitch was mostly a simple acknowledgment that Obama still holds the veto pen. What the owlish Kentuckian now calls the health-care spending bill can be tweaked but not repealed without a new president in 2013. If they harp on it too much, Republicans risk seeming as distracted from job one as Obama did this year.

Newsweek’s new owner should cut the terminally Leftist Alter’s salary to a dollar a year.
Newsweek angling for compromise? When the Democrats ran the show, there were no such jeremiads from them.
Jonathan Alter et al. are terrified of the coming GOP ascendancy.
Extended hand? As I recall his position was, "I won. Get out of the way and let us clean up the mess. No you can't read our heathcare bill before it comes up for a vote."
Job One is to guard America just enough so that it can flourish, not to try to wheedle or bully it with endless initiatives that (how conveeeeenient) also line this or that politician’s pocket, or stroke a Marxist agenda ego.
Newsweak should follow US News into the annals of history
Why even post this garbage?
Newsweak boys are toking in the back room again...
To them compromise only comes from the GOP side
Alter is very confused. He tries to find a way to save flop ears from consequences of the election.
I have a feeling a overused veto pen to stop the will of the people will be of no service to Zero.
People want Obama stopped until they can vote him out. This last election was a vote on him, and he lost.
Go back to the drawing board Mr Alter and try a little harder.
Jonathan Alter: What me worry? (Obama & the ascendant GOP may actually get something undone)
He’s Come Undone
He’s come undone
He didn’t know
what he was headed for
And when I found
what he was headed for
It was too late
He’s come undone
He found a mountain
that was far too high
And when he found out
he couldn’t fly
It was too late
It’s too late
He’s gone too far
He’s lost the sun
He’s come undone
We wanted truth
but all we got was lies
Came the time to realize
And it was too late
He’s come undone
He didn’t know
what he was headed for
And when I found
what he was headed for
Obama, it was too late
It’s too late
He’s gone too far
He’s lost the sun
He’s come undone
Too many mountains
and not enough stairs to climb
Too many Wright churches
and not enough truth
Too many people
and not enough eyes to see
Too many lies
to plead and not enough time
It’s too late
He’s gone too far
He’s lost the sun
He’s come undone
(Doe-doe-doe-doe-doe
(doe un doe-doe-doe un doe-doe-doe)
(Doe doe-doe-doe-doe un doe-doe-doe doe-doe-doe)
(Doe doe-doe-doe doe doe-doe-doe doe doe)

Republicans need to flood the White House with new programs and changes to existing programs so Democrats can’t focus on any one item. Don’t just focus on Health Care, hit everything that is bad with Washingtion. They have a huge list to keep them busy. If they don’t do this, I doubt they will get re-elected. Washington has to change big time.........this time. No messing around. They will either get serious or get out of town.
The big one is to control the Federal Reserve and the bankers that run it.
Once again the feckless Alter is utterly confused.
That was not Obama's extended hand - it was his extended middle finger...
RE: Hes Come Undone
My take on this song is it was about a girl who was probably on drugs, which caused her to hallucintate making he r think she could fly.
Of course when she found out she couldn’t fly, MAMA it was TOO LATE.
You seem to be telling me that Obama thinks he’s so powerful, he believes he can fly...
WTF is Alter smoking? Is he kidding? Obama had years of fawning press.
And did not Alter right a left wign screed not a few weeks ago warning America against voting Republican this past election.
Alter is busy rewriting history.
This is what they do.
Obama was partisan and left-wing from the day he became President. The Democrats shut out the GOP in all their bills.
The failure to work together was the Democrats’ decision and fault, but the lib-media wants to tag the GOP with excesive partisanship to shame them into giving in to the Democrats’ agenda.
Repeat the lie over and over again, until it is the ‘narrative’.
