The Secretary of Defense is not a uniformed position, although looking it up Gates was a former Air Force officer assigned to the Strategic Air Command.

The garb is not important; if Generals can design their own uniforms, certainly this guy can wear a civilian suit...but the effect is the same.

I was also in the Strategic Air Command, big deal, but I'm not advocating gays in the military.
