A key witness who testified against former Gov. Rod Blagojevich at his summer corruption trial was charged Friday with shoplifting at a Northwest Side store.
Rajinder Bedi, 58, is accused of stealing $166 in merchandise from the Home Depot in the 6200 block of North Lincoln.
Bedi, who is charged with felony retail theft, did not return a phone message.
Bedi had been the $118,000-a-year managing director of the state's Office of Trade and Investment in Blagojevich's administration.
Bedi testified under immunity in July at Blagojevich's trial on the ex-governor's alleged efforts to sell President Obama's former Senate seat.
Prosecutors said Bedi met with Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and a major Jackson fund-raiser, Raghuveer Nayak, on Oct. 28, 2008, at the 312 Chicago restaurant. At the meeting, Nayak promised to raise $1 million for Blagojevich if he appointed Jackson to the Senate seat, prosecutors said.
On the witness stand, Bedi admitted attending the meeting. Later, he said the governor's brother, Robert, rejected the offer.
Recordings of Bedi's discussions with Robert Blagojevich also were played during the trial. Bedi's arrest could undermine his credibility should he be called as a witness at Blagojevich's retrial next year.
Blagojevich was convicted of lying to the FBI. His retrial will be on counts the jury deadlocked on.
Must've hid stuff in his turban. If this compromises his testifying against Blago and Jesse Jr. or any of the other fradsters at the Blago retrial in April, it's gonna be too, too Chicago Way suspicious.
.. Chicago Way thief .. Ping!
If Diogenes ever went to Chicago, he’d better bring tons of oil for his lamp.

Stealing $166 dollars worth of merchandise from Home Depot may undermine his credibility, but dealing with JJ Jr. and Blago with millions at stake did not?
Have you seen the price of oil?
