Iowans made a clean sweep of the state Supreme Court on Tuesday, voting to recall all three justices who were up for a retention election. The rout is being played as an unprecedented politicization of state courts. Maybe if judges behaved less like politicians, they'd have less reason to fear recall votes.
Voters were expressing their dismay over a 2009 Iowa court ruling that gave the green light to same-sex marriage. That unanimous decision, which overturned a state law defining marriage as between a man and a woman, struck voters as an attempt by the seven justices to impose their views on the state. This is precisely the kind of judicial arrogancefinding a right to gay marriage in the state constitution after many decades in which no one noticed itthat the recall election was designed for.

Now I don’t have to read comments here anymore, about how messed up my state is .
Great news!
Voting Branstad back in didn’t hurt. :)
Branstad supports "civil unions."
True. But folks need to wake up to the fact that the judges couldn't pull this crap if the legislatures refused to let them get away with it.
The power to impeach has never been employed to the extent it should be. Our representatives better start using that power soon to enforce constitutional adherence, or we're not going to have a free republic left.
We here in Minnesota are indeed proud of our southern brother.
Now if we could get our own act together!
I agree. Now that the spotlight has shown the wolf under the sheer sheeps clothing on the national scene, the Tea Parties need to extend their reach and politicize these Judge reaapointment proceedures for the next election cycles and to focus on the state houses with this as a prime issue of clearing the courts of activist judges.
A prime example was here in Florida. Two of the Florida Supreme Court who ruled against the Anit-Obamacare Amendment being on the ballot were just given a retention vote this last election. The Tea Party groups tried to organize late in its quest to oust these two but failed. Now is the time to research the next down ticket issues and to set issue papers for all to see.
The positive note for the Tea Party groups is that many will now look to see what they are saying after it was them who organized the grass root efforts to effect the kind of historic change we saw on Tuesday. They must now double their efforts because the attacks to marginalize them are coming as well.
I grew up in Altoona and left Iowa in 1978. Haven't been back since. Perhaps it's time for a visit.
And Trader Joes opened for the first time yesterday out in West Des Moines!

Iowa also passed a Shall Issue concealed carry permit system this year. Things are looking up for the state.
The good news for Florida, though, is the yes/no difference between Canady and Labarga was over 400,000 votes. That is a lot of people who got the message that the former was a good guy and the latter not worthy of retention. Double that number and Labarga would be toast. We just need to build on that.
So, when did you leave Iowa? Do you ever get back to visit family?
