(11-05) 19:18 PDT OAKLAND -- A couple of hundred protesters angered by the two-year sentence handed down for former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle surged into the streets of downtown Oakland tonight, marching past Lake Merritt and smashing car windows as police stood by in case severe violence breaks out.
The crowd started walking south on 14th Street at about 6:25 p.m. Several in the crowd said they were headed to the Fruitvale BART station, which is about three miles from City Hall.
The station is where Mehserle shot Oscar Grant, an unarmed train rider, early Jan. 1, 2009.
At Laney College, about 100 police officers formed a line to stop the march at about 6:45 p.m. One protester threw a soda can at the riot-gear-clad police, and within 15 minutes, the crowd had broken through the construction fence at a nearby park and made its way past Lake Merritt.
From there, the crowd marched along International Boulevard, smashing about a dozen car windows, and then wandered the streets until it was trapped on Sixth Avenue between East 17th and East 18th streets by police.
The marchers had started out about 250 strong in the beginning, but by 7 p.m. there were only about 100 left - and 500 police officers had blocked them in on both ends of Sixth Avenue.
Many of the demonstrators had gathered outside City Hall after a judge in Los Angeles sentenced Mehserle to the minimum term for the involuntary-manslaughter slaying of Grant When the rally broke up at 6 p.m., protesters headed into the streets.
Some stores had boarded up their windows and several businesses closed early out of concern over possible unrest.

If the cretins in San Francisco rioted because the Giants won the series, naturally Oakland couldn’t be outdone in the mindless mob sweepstakes.
Residuals of Jerry Brown’s tenure.
A minor rioting, looting opportunity and a general desire to raise Hell is what the demonstration is really about for most of the players.
Sounds like a nice neighborhood.....
smashing car windows as police stood by in case severe violence breaks out
But of course if the rest of us have a dangling seat belt, they come after us and write a $120 ticket
How is it going so far?
turned to KRON 4 and looks like it’s a do over.
I don’t understand how one of the cops had his gun taken from him and then pointed back at him.
I read about the Friday sentencing yesterday and didn’t think anything about it until I was on my way home this evening. A drugstore (Walgreens, 51st and Telegraph, Oakland) had its windows boarded up. Two employees were sitting outside. I asked them why the windows were boarded up, and one of them said “Just in case.”
Further west and toward downtown, there were some rough-looking people walking around, and they looked angry. I got home safely, but I was wondering if another riot was going to erupt.
Lots of angry people in Oakland.
How many of them voted for BO?
The hilarious part is it looks like many have been coralled into a small area and they are not dressed for night time cooling effects coming off the Bay.
I say bust the miscreants in the head and throw them in a blue room naked with no blanket.
How many out of the area Community Organizers are in town to agitate...
Lots of angry people in Oakland.
How many of them voted for BO?
115%
About 135% of 'em.
The media has been ginning this up, almost pushing for it, since last night.
They should immediately be tazed and hosed and sent downtown to be booked. Property damage is a crime.
Another excuse to party
I long for the days when rioters were shot.
So basically the cops are letting them do whatever they want and go wherever they want...
New Black Panthers? SEIU?
Time to send in the Korean store keepers...;0)
