Shut down a UNC campus? (BONUS COVERAGE - Erskine Bowles: Social Security’s Enemy No. 1?)

Shut down a UNC campus?
By Eric Ferreri - Staff writer

File this under "Worst Case Scenario."

UNC President Erskine Bowles is broaching something many would surely view unthinkable: If budget cuts continue at higher levels than now anticipated, might an entire public university campus be shut down?

"If you have 20 percent budget cuts, you'll have to think about closing down campuses," Bowles told members of the UNC system's Board of Governors today. "Period."

That was the second time this morning Bowles broached that notion - an extreme one, no doubt, but one he said would be preferable in the long term than continually chipping away at the budgets of all campuses.

"If we keep having cuts, cuts, cuts, we'll have to look at eliminating schools - campuses," he said. "If it went on for several years, that would be the smart decision. The unfortunate, smart decision."

To be CRYSTAL clear here - the shuttering of a public university campus is NOT under consideration. But the fact that the idea has been broached publicly speaks to the seriousness of the current university budget situation.

It always amazes me: it never occurs to these people that there might be a touch of bloat in the front office and that there might in fact not actually be enough teachers. They just can’t get that thought into their heads and it seems that the newspuppies sent to stroke them never think to ask.

That’s what has to stop, IMHO.

Not a bad idea, but how about shutting down all ethnic studies programs first. Women’s studies would be good too.

Anything but cut ethnic studies, trans-gender studies, queer studies, criminology, performance art... Never mind administrative overhead.

BTW, I'm all for cutting campuses and going electronic.

Online school sucks. It has its place, but it’s worse than regular school.

Hey Erskine, what about the endowment money? ... University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill $1.8 Billion (Jan 2010)

Don;t know, do know that NC builds palaces for schools and then staffs them with semi-literates paid better than I (an MBA) am paid, with the three months off and many ‘staff-development days’.

I have no pity for them and give them only so much money as it takes to get my children through the morass (that’s about done).

As an NCSU grad/fan I vote that they shut down the one in Chapel Hill. :-)

Quit ‘teaching’ classes that are peripheral & have no value for getting a job. When I was a kid- they were called ‘basket-weaving’ classes. Remove them from the ciriculum. Let those classes appear off campus with a business person running them.

Quit giving out ‘scholarships’ to ‘athletes(thugs on BB court) to ‘students’ that have to have a constant tutor to get a C- grade. Make them pay their own way.

Push acedemics more than athleticism.

Quit letting ‘students’ qualify for ‘student loans’ for a college criteris that has no possible employment prospects after ‘graduation’. They face an enormous amount of debt & have no chance of ‘following their dream’ of being paid to be hired to study something like “how was Stonehenge built”!!

Quit running ‘remedial classes’ for the things that should have been learned by ‘students’ in GRADE school & HIGH school. Set a standard & force the lower schools to give you more prepared ‘students’ before the first day of freahman classes.

Clean up your entrance exam standards.

DRUG TEST every student on a random & regular basis. Get caught dirty for drugs? You are expelled & your record follows you where ever you try to go.

Quit filling precious seats with ‘professional students’=those who have no desire to EVER go out and actually work!!

Quit letting the Fraternities & Sororities act like it is 24/7/365 ANIMAL HOUSE. I don’t wish them not to have some fun, but behaving like 6th graders loose at the zoo isn’t contributing to making them into adults.

Learn how Hillsdale College operates & take a page from their book.

Turning loose hundreds of thousands of ‘college graduates’ every year on the American business world that cannot shine their shoes effectively isn’t helping a single American voter.

So far. Give it time and I'll bet it will be better. You'll be able to watch the best lecturers in the world with complete dynamic multimedia graphics and tutorials for a fraction of the price we pay now. They will get deservedly rich.

Have a question? Think Skype.

Why is it so unthinkable? Reduce the number of campuses by six:

Shut UNC-Asheville or Appalachian St.
Combine UNC Greensboro with Greensboro, NC A&T
Combine UNC Winston-Salem, Winston-Salem St., and UNC School of the Arts
Combine NC Central, NC School of Science and Math and NC St.
