GOP’s McNulty will lead House in a split legislature ( Colorado )

“It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood,” declared veteran GOP Rep. Glenn Vaad, of Mead, today at the Capitol as House Republicans elected new leadership on the heels of wresting control of their chamber on election night. It will be the first time in six years that Republicans have led the House of Representatives.

The House gavel, when the legislative session resumes in January, will be handed over to Republican Rep. Frank McNulty, of Highlands Ranch, by outgoing Democratic Speaker Terrence Carroll, of Denver. McNulty, who will preside over the chamber as its next speaker, was cheered by collegues who had helped him orchestrate the Republicans’ successful bid to regain a majority–albeit by only one vote...

tempering the GOP’s enthusiasm over its victory in the House is the fact that the Senate will remain in Democratic hands as will the Governor’s Office in the wake of Tuesday’s mixed election results.

Yeah that is actually really good news.

I have to keep reminding my friends that outside Colorado things are definitely looking up.

But they are pretty bummed that our state is looking like CA East.

The congressional results are actually good. Most of the state is solid red. The only Democratic congresscritters left now hail from Boulder and Denver.

The Colorado delegation to Congress now consists of four Republicans and three Democrats, a significant change from the previous composition of five Democrats and only two Republicans.

Norton would have won in a walk, just as Ayotte did in NH.

you are totally correct about norton. but buck should have won and i still don’t know why they didn’t ask for a recount. there is always a chance for an error. bennet’s campaign ran extremely effective negative ads. if buck would have won douglas and el paso county by a little higher per cent, it would have been a great night.

And Paul Lundeen (strong conservative) was elected to the state Board of Education.

wish there was a way to legislate boulder out of colorado. good timing since cu is moving to the pac 12. boulder county was huge for the dems. it takes a lot of the rural counties to offset boulder...much less denver.

Usually El Paso, the largest county in the state offsets Denver and Boulder. With all that conservative turnout, it should have provided the edge in the Senate, gubernatorial race and on various propositions.

i totally agree. the problem is that buck only got around 60% of the vote in el paso county. the other republicans trended higher. if the turnout would have been higher in douglas or elpso county or he ran at 65%, it would have been a win for buck. bennet’s ads scared a lot of women. i can’t believe they fell for it....sad that the negative campaign worked so well.

Yup. Had El Paso voted 70% for Tancredo, Buck and everything else, the story here would be different.

Stupid GOPers. You wonder what possessed them to stay home in this state.

Thanks for the ping g76. Did anyone see this article yesterday?:

Buescher: Tancredo Request Prompted Ballot Rush

snip

Buescher says county clerks were handed "tens of thousands" of provisional ballots on Election Day, swamping polling places.

snip

County clerks have until Nov. 25 to verify signatures and count the votes.

If there are indeed "tens of thousands" of ballots left to be counted, how does this affect some of the closer races? Tancredo said on Boyles program, and is indirectly confirmed in this article, that a lot of the rush for the provisional ballots was from people that were voting straight Repub and mistakenly marked the Dan Maes box when they really wanted to vote for Tancredo. I almost did this myself because I'm so used to voting a straight Repub ticket. Tancredo knows it won't affect his race, but what about the close ones?

You wonder what possessed them to stay home in this state.

There's no mystery about that. The Maes/Tancredo fiasco at the top of the ticket affected turnout. Tancredo has lots of negatives that Hickenlooper never even had to point out.

That said, Buck ran an awful campaign. He never responded to all the attack ads and kept putting his foot in his mouth about social issues and getting off message on the economy. Buck was largely unknown in most of Colorado and he let himself be painted as a far right radical when in fact he's a mainstream conservative, certainly not more to the right than Sen. Allard was.

This should not have come as a surprise. Maes is an UNsuccessful businessman who has never even held office as a dog catcher. Buck's only office was DA in a mid-size county outside the metro area. We have to nominate qualified, experienced conservatives or the voters won't go for our candidate.
