Washington (CNN) – His party got its clock cleaned in Tuesday's midterm elections, but according to a new national poll President Obama remains competitive in hypothetical 2012 presidential election matchups, especially against Sarah Palin.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Thursday also indicates that at the unofficial start of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, the field of possible contenders appears wide open with no front-runner.
According to the poll, 21 percent of Republicans say they would most likely support former Arkansas Gov. and 2008 GOP White House candidate Mike Huckabee for their party's 2012 presidential nomination, with 20 percent saying they'd back former Massachusetts Gov. and 2008 Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, 14 percent supporting Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, and 12 percent backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia.
The remaining candidates whose names were asked in the question were all in single digits, led by Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who also ran for the GOP presidential nomination the last time around, followed by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana at 3 percent, and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at 2 percent.

In a possible general election showdown, Obama leads Palin 52-44 percent among all registered voters.
"Looking ahead to 2012, it may be too early to count Barack Obama out, particularly if Sarah Palin is his opponent," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

In a hypothetical 2012 matchup, Huckabee leads Obama 52 – 44 percent, while Romney has a 50-45 point advantage, which is within the poll's sampling error. Obama hold a 49-47 percent margin over Gingrich.

I see the commies are getting an early start in trying to determine who our candidate will be. It’s pretty clear who they fear.

Just remember people - CNN are liars who would like us to run who they and the other TV networks, elites and islamics “picked” for us last time - Juan McCain.
I can’t wait to see if they wait one year and ask about Obama vs Rubio.

I don’t see Romney, Huckabee, Palin, or anyone else from the “pre-depression” group as contenders in 2 years. They may be active, even try for the nomination, but I don’t see it happening. If Palin was better-read, she’d have a chance, but in reality she’s not much quicker on her feet than the Kenyan Pirate (and I do like her; she’ll probably be very active in the campaign in any case).
It’s early to specualte, though.

Given what Sarah has been through, I wouldn't blame her a bit for playing more a (super) Rove role, and making many more millions in the process.
I can only hope that a far better candidate than the Huckster, Plastic Mitt and the rest of the current losers emerges. It's truly a shame that Sarah has the baggage that she has, due to a relentless media and shameless liberal "celebrities"...
Perhaps things will change over the next year or so, but given that we need to throw 0 out on his ear, this may not be Sarah's time...it may come down the road a bit though. ;-)

Palin can not win a presidential race.
I like her, but recognize her limitations. She has been playing a terrific role in doing what she has been doing. Palin would do great in the South, but that’s where it would end. I don’t see her winning PA, FL, or Ohio against 0bama. A republican doesn’t win a presidential election without at least two of those three. She MIGHT be able to win Ohio out of those three states, but that’s about it. Where will she make up for those lost Electoral Votes on the map?
I’m going with Pence.
Oh Puuuuuuuuuuuuulease! Mitt? No thanks. Talk about uninspiring. I am sick of RINOs! If the GOP nominee in 2012 is a RINO, he/she is guaranteed to lose. Hands down. Period. Lose! I vow that I will never, EVER - vote for another RINO...ever again.

As I mentioned elsewhere tonite, the State-Run-Media Romney campaign is starting....they fear ONLY Sarah Palin as an opponent, and push the RINO’s as “favorites”.
