Johnson Wins District 30 Despite Scandal

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) In the midst of many Republican gains, the Associated Press announced that Democrat Eddie Bernice Johnson had defeated her challenger for District 30 U.S. Representative despite a nationally publicized scholarship scandal.
Her opponent, Republican Stephen Broden, didnt want to discuss the race, and refused to concede until all votes counted. With 77 percent of precincts reporting, however, Broden was trailing by 54 percent of the vote.
**SNIP**
Broden would still not concede the race.
In August, officials with the Congressional Black Caucus, of which Johnson is a member, announced that 23 scholarships she handed out since 2005 had violated eligibility rules.
Each member in the caucus receives $10,000 in scholarship money to give to individuals in the community. She reportedly steered scholarships to four family members and two children of one of her aides.
Broden, however, has made harsh comments toward President Barack Obama, and last year at a rally in North Richland Hills said he would advocate a violent overthrow of the government.
All that was taken out of context, said Adryana Boyne, one of Brodens campaign managers. The people who know Stephen Broden know hes a very peaceful man. He was speaking in a metaphorical manner when he was talking about that.

It was a very safe minority Democrat seat. VERY safe.
Just like Charlie Rangel & Shelia Jackson Lee.
See any pattern here?
She’s Black...she could KILL someone and they would elect her!
Broden is black, too, but a conservative Republican and a preacher who walks the walk. He didn’t stand a chance.
That district deserves Eddie Bernice. The rest of us have to live with her.
Same for Sheila Jackson Lee and her minority district in Houston. Some things are just lost causes.
He’s black too. Race was not the explanation.
And he did NOT promote or advocate a violent overthrow.
There’s some other nonsense behind this. I’m convinced the people of that district can’t read and don’t know how to tune a TV or radio to the news.
This is the danger of voting straight ticket. What a bunch of bleedin’ morons.
And Maxine Waters...the pattern continues.
I believe a few years ago a Dem congresswoman (or state legislator) in a minority district in MA was finally retired because they had actual video of her stuffing bribe money in her bra.
I think in some of these cases, they could have video of the congresscritter robbing a bank at gunpoint, or stealing an elderly person’s purse, and they would still be re-elected.
In the ‘hood, the only crime worthy of defeat is acting “white.” Get back, Cracker!
Oh, swell. Her “needy” grandkids, nieces and nephew can continue to “randomly” get selected for those sweet Congressional college scholarships.
Dallas (the city) is becoming more like Detroit with each passing day.
Time to end those gerrymandered minority-majority (oxymoron?) districts.
Dems only think a scandal is a scandal if it involves a Repub, not their own. They always close ranks.
Blind people. If they want to re-elect her, then they deserve her. One of the worst districts in the DFW area.
...”Same for Sheila Jackson Lee and her minority district in Houston.”
I believe that particular district was specifically created to be a black district...forever....I think Barbara Jordan held it for a long time....btw, same thing will happen if Washington DC gets statehood...two black senators in perpetuity
Mixed bag. By throwing them all in together, you should elect many more Conservatives. On the other hand, no group should have a special right to seat.
I was a poll watcher at a polling place for two precincts in District 30, and I can tell you point-blank that the reason Stephen Broden lost, and lost by such a broad margin, was voters pulling straight-ticket “D”. I overheard EASILY a third of the voters who showed up that day asking the election judge and clerks (and even a few times asking me) what they needed to do if they just wanted to vote straight-ticket Democrat. Average time spent by a voter in a voting booth probably 10 seconds, with half of that spent looking for the pen with which to mark the ballot. And I was there all day, from the minute they calibrated and certified the ballot machine to the minute they certified and sealed the ballots for transport.
Sheneneh will be back for another 6 years!
Da-yum, girl.
