CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina Rep. Mel Watt is set to start a 10th term in Congress.
The Democratic lawmaker defeated Republican opponent Greg Dority in unofficial election results Tuesday.
Watt has voted along with his party's leadership on major issues such as President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, the $814 billion stimulus package and the financial industry bailout of 2008. He has become a congressional leader on minority affairs.
Dority has focused his 2010 campaign on the nation's economic collapse and government spending. He lives in Washington, N.C., across the state from the 12th District, which stretches along Interstate 85 from Charlotte to Greensboro.
Redistricting will be in the works.

Wow! Take about gerrymandering!
That particular Voting Rights Act district may or may not change much.
Wow! Talk about gerrymandering!
That map split small towns in half and as in my little town, the line pretty much just took all the black neighborhoods. The white neighborhoods still had/has Howard Coble as our representative.
I am glad the state house finally went to the Repubs. Congrats NC!!! I had thought the state was totally lost after 2008.
Note: I still have a home in NC, and go back and forth, but vote in NV..sadly :(
It will be good to see Mel packing his bags.
IIRC some Federal judge mandated two black majority districts, hence the gerrymandering.
