ANALYSIS: In Texas, D meant defeat
Houston Chronicle ^ | Nov. 3, 2010 | JOE HOLLEY

Republican storm created too much headwind for most Dems

From the moment the "Bill White for Texas" campaign moved from a U.S. Senate race to a governor's race, the Democratic candidate knew he was facing a long, hard, low-gear climb. Bill White, an inveterate bicyclist, needed every gear to mesh perfectly. He needed a clear path, however challenging.

He got neither. A red-state race that all along was going to be daunting proved an impossible slog in a state full of restive Republicans determined to reverse their 2006 and 2008 losses and in an anti-Washington season that grew ever bleaker for candidates nationwide with a D attached to their names.

Many of White's fellow Democrats in Harris County and statewide were swept out of office in the deluge:

Veteran Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia lost to Republican lawyer Jack Morman.

Harris County District Clerk Loren Jackson lost to Republican challenger Chris Daniel.

U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, a 20-year House veteran, lost badly to Republican Bill Flores, while in San Antonio, U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriquez lost to Republican banker-lawyer Francisco "Quico" Canseco.

In the state legislature, more than 20 incumbent Democrats lost their seats, including Houston-area freshman lawmaker Kristi Thibaut and two-term incumbent Ellen Cohen.

With incumbent Gov. Rick Perry, one of the most adept campaigners in the country, riding the wave of anti-Washington, anti-Obama fervor, White had no way to stop him, despite running a credible race. Perry ran a smart, disciplined race that avoided any of the mistakes that White desperately needed him to make. In 25 years as an elected official, Perry has never lost a race.

White had never lost a race either, but there was nothing the former Houston mayor could have done that would have made a difference this time...

We dodged a bullet with Bill White.

Perry has his warts, but he's MILES better than White.

The only reason Bill White did as well as he did was because he got the New Orleans transplant vote across the state.

Does anyone know how the State Senate came out. There were 16 Senate seats up for election and the GOP held a 19 - 12 advantage going in. Did the seats remain as before or did any change parties so that the 19 -12 ratio changed? Does anyone know?

What a stupid guy. Tying himself to Obama - thank you Lawd - showed Texans just how extreme the Democrats are. There is no longer a Democratic Party in Texas worth nothing!

Thanks, Bill White - you did a splendid job!

he got the New Orleans transplant vote across the state.

Probably even some of the ones who reside in the "steel bar" Government housing.

Democrats pretty much swept Dallas County.

That’s why I live in Denton County.

Democrats pretty much swept Dallas County.

You remember when the hurricane hit New Orleans? The NO mayor even moved to Dallas and enrolled his children in school here. After they were all ensconced, they voted democrat and we lost a number of judgeships. But Dallas is not a liberal haven. Craig Watkins is a thieving anomaly.

Too bad the people of TX-30 could not bring themselves to walk off the plantation.

If a candidate like Pastor Broden with his years of connection and trust building in that district cannot unseat a known corrupt politician, they don't want to be free.
