In 1872, Congress passed the General Amnesty Act, and that ended reconstruction. Federal troops left the south, southerners regained the voting franchise and rebel states were re-admitted into the union.

A similar story happened here in NC. The GOP took control of the General Assembly for the first time since 1898! That’s 112 years.
