Poll shows Skelton up 7 percent; both candidates plan rallies for veterans

PULASKI COUNTY, Mo. (Oct. 29, 2010) — A new poll commissioned by a Springfield-area television station and Missouri State University in Springfield shows U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton up by 7 percentage points over his Republican challenger, former State Rep. Vicky Hartzler. The poll attributes Skelton’s rise to concerns over the future of Fort Leonard Wood, and both candidates will hold campaign rallies in the Fort Leonard Wood area today and tomorrow. According to the poll’s director, Missouri State University Professor Brian Calfano, Skelton’s lead in a bad year for Democrats is due to “three words: Fort Leonard Wood ... Skelton's lead is likely due to his relentless series of TV ads that question whether Vicky Hartzler will be able to protect Fort Leonard Wood from future rounds of base closings.” Skelton’s rally is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Hampton Inn at 103 St. Robert Boulevard in St. Robert, just north of Interstate 44 off Exit 161. Hartzler’s rally is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon at VFW Post 3168 on 26050 Swindell Drive on the south side of Exit 150 on Interstate 44 at Highway 7, near the Laquey ambulance base.

She’s a fantastic candidate. That district is supposedly conservative so again, I would question the polls. Skelton is a Pelosi democrat and that’s a rural area that is heavily farmed. Skelton voted for Cap & Trade which will kill that area (among many). With the exception of defense Skelton is a no good liberal rat.

I use to be in this old bull Clinton type democrat. He is less liberal in his appearance than say a Pelosi or Barney Frank image. However, he is a liberal of Clinton good old boy.

This district is fairly large in land mass but mainly rural, small towns and then of course Ft. Leonard Wood. Thing of it is the majority of people are born and bred democrat and go to Sunday meeting second. Sadly more than enough are old and young that are reliant upon some sort of government provisions... Even 'farming' is government cooperative and even much of the electricity is government subsided...

Good points. I’ll be praying for Ms. Hartzler; we need her in congress. Skelton may have been a clinton good ole boy dem but he’s made a hard left turn now.

Thanks, I too am praying there are enough in this district that have been awakened to the destruction the liberals have in mind for US that will send old bull Ike out to graze on the grass the rest of his days. Oh bull Clinton is of the same mind as BamBam, just that he was raised in America and he used his gift of good old boy gab to seduce the masses. I call bull Clinton democrats the Billy Graham democrats.

This is an alternative paper I will put in my media folder.

In particular this editor is very anti-PC. To whit:

Hartzler blasts Skelton for not working harder against homosexual agenda (MO 4th).

Concern over Ft Leonard Wood??? This is one of the Army’s biggest training bases next to Ft Benning GA. It’s also very econonimical and centrally located. Can’t imagine why anybody would be concerned. Don’t know how many people they could get to a Rally around there. Unless you go West to Lebanon outside the gates it is a pretty rural area.

I met Ike Skelton on the Flightline at Whiteman AFB back in 2000. He reminded me of “Tall Man” in the Phantasm movies. To shake hands, he literally sling his right hand up, from his shoulder, where I caught it in mid swing and it was as cold as an iceberg. I figured he was a stroke victim. I thought to myself, here is a man who is walking dead and won’t be around for very much longer. That was TEN years ago and he is running for re-election.

Ike Skelton has been lying to the people of his district for years and he’s gotten very good at it. Ft. Leonard Wood isn’t going anywhere and he knows it. But, if lies are what it takes, lies are what the folks will get.

Ike has people convinced that he is a conservative, but he votes like a liberal, especially since he became one of Nancy’s committee chairmen.

I did my basic at Leonard Wood and would love to see it closed. My greatest fear when I was PCS’ing from Germany was to get stationed there. Thank God I got Fort Devens instead.

Why do you want Ft. Wood closed?

IF you get the opportunity ask old Ike why Congress abdicated their authority for such things as base closings to an unaccountable commission.

Because it’s a hole in the middle of nowhere. I’m a Boston guy, the Ozarks don’t do it for me. Of course I was there almost 30 years ago, it could be a swell place now?

It has been a few years since I was in the neighborhood, my oldest graduated from UMR in Rolla 2004. But I doubt there has been all that much change. I have been to Boston a few times so I can understand the 'culture' or lack thereof shock. But it is 'basic' military training for the most part.

I had no problem with the culture, the people were very nice. The only real time off I had there was in between Basic and AIT, which was one weekend so I didn’t get to see much. I had a friend who was stationed there Permanent Party and he hated it.
