I think the word which makes the distinction between Washington and Jefferson versus the modern crop, is statesmen. Unlike the politicians of today, neither of them aspired to be Monarch, and Washington turned the post down.

Both of them worked for a future for their countrymen. Personal gain appears to have been on the back burner for them. They made real sacrifices and took very real risks for the cause of freedom from English rule.

The majority of the crop of politicians we have today are but a pale shadow at best.

Another major difference is that today we have people that enter politics with good intentions but get corrupted by the system. Our Founders were not corrupted. When Jefferson became President, he launched an investigation into Hamilton and his bank and couldn’t find anything he did wrong, though he disagreed with the whole idea of the bank. Today, there is corruption under every stone, even by those we think of as incorruptible.
