>>>I think you’re right on this - those of us who are former liberals have strong liberal-dar...<<<

And this is the year that we’ve reached a critical mass.

The same thematic premise occurred in the old Soviet Union. At first, the true believers were in charge, creating all sorts of changes, some hope, and mostly carnage and destruction. Then came the cynic attitudes, the need to temper speech in order to maintain friendships and jobs, and the obvious corruption of the party elite. Eventually, no one believed in the system, and it evaporated, although there are some leftovers who pine away for the dachas in the country and the dreams of Communist omnipotence.

The same process is taking place right now among American progressives. Those of us who have been in the belly of the beast are especially cynical about the left, and politically correct speech is the source of mocking even as shrill feminists and racebaiters roam the landscape, looking for a chance to be insulted. There’s a reason “South Park” is popular, and it isn’t for upholding leftwing principles. The corruption of our own progressive party elite was demonstrated recently when Juan Williams was fired for expressing his feelings in public.

Of course, the primary oversight of the post-Soviet era was the lack of human rights trials for the communists. They deserved to be treated the way the Nazis were treated at the end of World War II.

I hope that we won’t make the same mistake with our own corrupt elite.
