President Obama's post-partisan America has disappeared, replaced by the politics of polarization, resentment and division.
In a Univision interview on Monday, the president, who campaigned in 2008 by referring not to a "Red America" or a "Blue America" but a United States of America, urged Hispanic listeners to vote in this spirit: "We're gonna punish our enemies and we're gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us."
Recently, Obama suggested that if Republicans gain control of the House and/or Senate as forecast, he expects not reconciliation and unity but "hand-to-hand combat" on Capitol Hill.
What a change two years can bring.
We can think of only one other recent president who would display such indifference to the majesty of his office: Richard Nixon.
We write in sadness as traditional liberal Democrats who believe in inclusion. Like many Americans, we had hoped that Obama would maintain the spirit in which he campaigned. Instead, since taking office, he has pitted group against group for short-term political gain that is exacerbating the divisions in our country and weakening our national identity. The culture of attack politics and demonization risks compromising our ability to address our most important issues - and the stature of our nation's highest office.
Indeed, Obama is conducting himself in a way alarmingly reminiscent of Nixon's role in the disastrous 1970 midterm campaign. No president has been so persistently personal in his attacks as Obama throughout the fall. He has regularly attacked his predecessor, the House minority leader and - directly from the stump - candidates running for offices below his own. He has criticized the American people suggesting that they are "reacting just to fear" and faulted his own base for "sitting on their hands complaining."

FrankR wrote - “Our vigilence is not over on November 3rd; this tsunami was brought by we - the people - and now we have to protect our integrity by policing the newly electeds...including our own side of the aisle.”
..... Truer words never spoken. However well the conservative movement does on 2 Nov, it must above all be kept in mind that it will be a victory in a single battle of a very long war. Pressure and perseverance must be kept up, not only to reverse the economic calamity that the crypto-socialists have inflicted upon this nation, but also to ensure that their sole and individual responsibility for this disaster is indisputably and permanently tattooed upon the consciousness of the American public.
Over and above that, a comprehensive program must be implemented to eradicate all socialist infiltrators and sympathizers from appointed positions within the executive branches of state, federal and local governments. Clinton set the precedent for this by demanding resignation letters from all federal Justice Department prosecutors upon taking office. Our new president should not shrink from taking the same bold step at the federal level immediately upon taking office. Such individuals are part of the problem and, as such, need to be removed from the equation immediately.
The right must abandon this false nad fruitless one-way path of “political amity”. We are no longer dealing with Hubert Humphrey’s Democratic party, nor are we dealing with our grandparents’ political environment. Whether we like it or not, we are in a political WAR with the left for the soul of this nation. It is time to take the kid gloves off, spit in our hands, and take the fight hard right at the enemy.
My opinion.
Good photo & comment from our RAT bastard commie pig 0b0z0, usurper-in-chief. I hope he & the demoRATS fail miserably in everything they do.
Good article, especially coming from the Wash Post & Patrick H. Caddell and Douglas E. Schoen
I wish that were true, but it's not. A GOP controlled Congress repealed the GlassSteagall Act when Clinton was President. Alan Greenspan pushed a consumer driven economy and easy credit. GWB pushed housing for those who couldn't afford it.
The rats have more culpability, IMHO, from Clinton, Robert Rubin, his Treasury Secretary and his crony capitalists - the liberal Wall Street bankers, Franklin Raines at Fannie Mae, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd blocking oversight in the House and Senate, Gillibrand and Cuomo at HUD, etc., but the pubbies have to take their share of responsibility. It was a bipartisan, monumental mess.
ESPECIALLY our own side of the aisle.
You’re perfectly correct in what you say. I agree that the Right has not been entirely blameless. But no one and no party will ever meet a standard of perfection. the best that can be done is to herd the strays and cull the the herd when necessary.
That having been said, in my opinion, whether our economic debacle of 2008 was the result of the metasticization of the CRA and its consequent uncontrolled derivatives frenzy or the repeal of Glass-Steagal, or some combination thereof, is really not the issue. The real culprit is eight decades of socialist infiltration and intervention into the economy and politics of this nation. What the socialists have perpetrated over that time made this day inevitable; if not the CRA or Glass-Steagal, it would have been some other foolish and ill-conceived leftist time bomb that would have triggered it. For one thing, wait until we are forced to confront the consequences of unfunded pension liabilities - something which no one wants to discuss at this point.
It is essential to take a broad view of what the Left has perpetrated over time. These ideologues are not going to disappear from the scene on 3 November; they will be back. And we know that no means are too unscrupulous for them in poursuit of their goals. As a consquence, every effort must be extered to remove them fom positions where they can create more mischief and mayhem.
..... As I recall, was it not GWB who pressed for restraint and re-trenchment of the CRA, only to be rebuffed by the congressional left?
I heard Caddell on FNC a while ago explaining that a Republican tsunami is not a mandate.
Heavens...Pigs are flying! The WashPost has declared Obama toast. Too bad they don’t tell the whole story of what’s going on in the WH. That will come out after the election and hopefully before 2012.
I agree with him. If you look at poll after poll, people dislike the Republicans as much or moreso than they do Democrats.
People are just SO against Obama they want to rip out the wiring. They’ll worry about fixing the machinery after they’ve stopped the ongoing meltdown.
Yeah, but you have to keep in mind that even the Republican base has a negative opinion of the Republican party, while the Rat base always approves of the Rat party. If Republican go back to Washington and work with Obama and Democrats, the base will be done with them for good. This is their last chance.
