Packed house even attracts media from Belgium

U.S. Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell thanked a standing-room-only crowd of area manufactured-home residents for giving her a platform four years ago when she first entered the political arena.
Republican O’Donnell is locked in a battle with Democrat Chris Coons in a special election to fill the seat vacated when Sen. Joe Biden became vice president. The winner of the race takes office immediately following the election to serve out Biden’s four-year term.
O’Donnell was the featured speaker Monday, Oct. 25, during the monthly Delaware Manufactured Home Owners Association (DMHOA) meeting at the Indian River fire hall near Oak Orchard. The meeting attracted the attention of a reporter and photographer from Brussels, Belgium.
She has garnered national attention and become a headliner for the conservative Tea Party, and said she has closed the gap on Coons and is 6 or 7 points behind him, compared to a double-digit gap two weeks ago.
O’Donnell moved to Wilmington in 2003 and has run for U.S. Senate twice before, losing the Republican primary in 2006 and the 2008 race to Biden.
With her foundation honed during her adult life supporting, advocating and working for conservative and religious organizations, O’Donnell said she believes in limited government with less taxation and strict adherence to the U.S. Constitution.
She said the exact opposite is occurring under the Obama administration, whose polices have led to high unemployment with the loss of 2.5 million jobs.
“I’m concerned about the direction of our country. The America we grew up in is threatened in several ways,” she said.
She said leaders in Washington, D.C., do not view the freedoms laid out in the First Amendment as indispensable. She said she would never support or introduce legislation that does not pass the litmus test that it is supported by what is written in the U.S. Constitution.
O’Donnell said if elected she has already put together a priority list that includes stopping proposed tax increases due to take effect Jan. 1; halting cap-and-trade legislation that could increase utility bills; permanently eliminating the death tax, which is due to be reinstated Jan. 1 and would place a 55 percent tax on inheritances above $1 million; and lowering corporate income taxes, which are the second highest in the developed world.
She said real economic growth would be seen almost immediately by taking action to halt those initiatives. She said the average Delaware family would be hit with $6,000 in tax hikes next year if all proposed increases become law.
She said the answer to the country’s economic woes would be to reduce government spending, cut taxes and shrink the size of government.
“The best thing government can do is get out of the way of entrepreneurs and small business people,” she said.
She said that’s based on historical evidence. When administrations cut taxes and cut spending, as was done under presidents Kennedy and Reagan, the economy soared.
Private enterprise creates jobs, not the government, she said, but the government can assist growth by creating a pro-business environment.
She supports a repeal of the sweeping healthcare reforms proposed by the Obama administration and passed by Congress. “There is no doubt we need healthcare reform but we should not confuse coverage with healthcare,” she said.
She said healthcare costs are going up and more Americans are without healthcare insurance.
During a question-and-answer session, DMHOA president Ed Speraw asked questions related to manufactured home issues.
Although she would be limited in what action she could take at the national level, O’Donnell said she would advocate for the rights of manufactured homeowners.
O’Donnell said local manufactured-home advocate Jeannie Sisk of Rehoboth Beach has her ear.

She would already be ahead if it hadn’t been for that stupid “I’m not a witch” video. Who wrote that? The same guy that wrote the “I’m not a crook” speech?
From Monmouth’s report on the poll:
O’Donnell has actually pulled into a 49% to 43% lead in the southern part of the state (i.e. Kent and Sussex counties). Two weeks ago, this region of the state was divided at 47% for O’Donnell and 46% for Coons.
The Democrat continues to hold a sizable advantage in New Castle County, but the current 56% to 36% margin is down from the 63% to 33% edge he held earlier this month.
O’Donnell has also made gains among independent voters, now leading Coons 47% to 42% among this voting bloc.
Two weeks ago, she trailed in the independent vote by 51% to 41%.“While Coons still has the advantage, it has to be uncomfortable knowing that O’Donnell was able to shave 9 points off his lead in just two weeks.
I just hope they're not Astroturf.
