Armed security guards will be on hand at 36 unemployment offices around Indiana in what state officials said is a step to improve safety and make branch security more consistent.
No specific incidents prompted the action, Department of Workforce Development spokesman Marc Lotter told 6News' Norman Cox.
Lotter said the agency is merely being cautious with the approach of an early-December deadline when thousands of Indiana residents could see their unemployment benefits end after exhausting the maximum 99 weeks provided through multiple federal extension periods.

All that will be left in the private sector will be more honorable professions like hunting the 'king's deer', smuggling food and fuel, gunrunning, black marketeer...
Our unemployment “career center” has an armed guard. An older immigrant guy who I doubt could handle a true crisis.
I am using a one time program at the moment to work at a career change into culinary after six months of not even a hint of a job. I will not make more than UI from what I can tell at start, but I am going back to school as well. At least I am not sitting around the house.
Trying to get an apprenticeship as well while I am in school.
Not everyone can pack up, pick up and move... far too many people live paycheck to paycheck and the loss of the job is devastating. They will be worried about where the money will be coming from to put dinner on the table the next day, let alone where the money comes from to move.
If I forget to fill the bird feeder, the bluejays get quite violent.
