To: Pearls Before Swine

I think we all need to go back to paper ballots.

This is one place where ‘technology’ isn’t helping American voters. Too much room for fraud.

“Clint Williams” said he was for a paper ballot with an automated tally... you can always go back to the paper ballots for a manual recount or a chad inspection. With full computerization, you could argue that an encryped signature accompanying the bits would guarantee the same effect, but I don’t believe it. It’s a lot easier to find bits in memory than the more typical shoebox of uncounted ballots in some official’s trunk.

In my precinct we use the optically scanned paper ballots. In 08 they had a single touch screen machine but only a couple of people used it and they didn’t bring it back.

Personally I like the idea of a code number on each ballot and a phone number we could call to make sure our vote was counted correctly. That presnts other problems though.
