re: The machines we use (DuPage County, Illinois) create a paper trail that backs up the electronic tabulation with a printed record similar to a grocery store receipt.
The voting machines in Clark County, NV also create a paper trail similar to a grocery store receipt. The voter does not get a copy, but they do get to view their votes before pushing the final button to confirm and cast their ballot.

If a machine is software driven, there is no proof in pressing any "final button to confirm and cast their ballot." Anything at all can still happen within the machine after that step.
Are these the Sequoia voting machines, made in Chavez' Venezuela?

They get to view how they voted, but they have no idea how the votes are actually recorded.
