That’s not the same seat. Democrat Kay Hagan is in the Jesse Helms seat (and with Burr’s reelection, it will become the “cursed” seat).

The Burr seat history of the past 42 years:
1968, Democrat Sam Ervin wins final term (last to be reelected in this seat)
1974, Democrat Robert Morgan wins
1980, Morgan defeated by Republican John East
1986, East commits suicide, Republican Jim Broyhill appointed
11/1986, Broyhill defeated by Democrat Terry Sanford
1992, Sanford defeated by Republican Lauch Faircloth
1998, Faircloth defeated by Democrat John Edwards
2004, Edwards quits, Republican Richard Burr wins seat
