Hold it, we haven’t heard from the Desert Tortoise yet, and I hope we due to avoid this boondoggle.

What people do with there own money is their choice. When the government steals it to strengthen foreigners then I have a huge problem with it. It is personal property rights that made America the greatest economic power in the world. It is why foreigners invest in America in the first place. They know someone can not steal their stuff so they know it is save to invest here.

BrightSource Energy’s Mission

*********************************EXCERPTS***************************************

BrightSource Energy’s mission is to make solar energy cost competitive with fossil fuels by developing, building, owning and operating the world’s most cost-effective, environmentally-responsible and reliable large-scale solar energy projects.

Delivering on solar’s promise

BrightSource Energy, Inc. provides clean, reliable and low cost solar energy for utility and industrial companies worldwide. The BrightSource team combines nearly three decades of experience designing, building, and operating the world’s largest solar energy plants with world-class project development capabilities. BrightSource’s solar plants lead the industry in environmental design and help customers reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. Headquartered in Oakland, Calif., BrightSource Energy is a privately held company with operations in the United States, Israel and Australia.

The company is actively developing more than 4GW of solar power projects in Southwestern states – enough to power 1.4 million homes. BrightSource now has more than 2.6 gigawatts of power under contract, including the two largest solar power agreements ever – 1,300 megawatts with Southern California Edison and 1,310 megawatts with Pacific Gas & Electric Company. The company’s Solar Energy Development Center in Israel’s Negev Desert is demonstrating BrightSource’s Luz Power Tower (LPT) 550 technology and producing the world’s highest temperature and pressure solar thermal steam.

A history of solar expertise

The BrightSource Energy team blends internationally-renowned solar thermal technical experience with world-class finance and project development capabilities. BrightSource’s technical team pioneered solar energy nearly three decades ago as Luz International, Ltd. - the first company in the world to build commercially viable solar thermal plants. In 2006, Luz’ technical leadership joined forces with a world-class finance and project development team - which has collectively developed, constructed, and managed more than 20GW of power projects worldwide - to form BrightSource Energy. The combined experience of BrightSource Energy’s technical and commercial teams, coupled with its breakthrough LPT 550 technology, has positioned the company as a world leader in solar thermal energy.

Clean, reliable, low-cost energy

BrightSource Energy’s proprietary LPT 550 energy system is based on proven power tower technology. The system uses thousands of small mirrors to reflect sunlight onto a boiler atop a tower to produce high temperature steam. The steam is then piped to a conventional turbine, which generates electricity. In order to conserve precious desert water, the steam is air-cooled and piped back into the system in a closed-loop, environmentally friendly process. This fully integrated energy system is designed to offer the highest operating efficiencies and lowest capital costs in the industry. The result is a large-scale solar system that delivers clean, reliable energy at a cost competitive with fossil fuels.

Ahh, Daggett. That brings back memories.

I worked a Natural Gas Compressor Station project across the street (Route 66) from that facility.

Some History:

A Few Links on Luz International, Once the World’s Largest Solar Company

By Alexis Madrigal ⋅ November 15, 2009

Luz International was the world’s largest solar company for about a decade, installing over 300 megawatts of solar thermal electric power plants in the Mojave desert. The company’s demise came about in the early 90s, when low energy prices, unhelpful policy changes, and bad luck came together to destroy the company. More on this soon, but it’s the best example, I think, of a missed opportunity in renewable energy. The founder of Luz, Arnold Goldman, is back with a new company, Brightsource, as noted in the article below. Other members of the old team have gone to work with other new companies, too, like Abengoa Solar’s VP of tech development Hank Price, who was at Luz for nine years (and then at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory).

The approval clears the way for the developers to seek ***federal grants and loan guarantees***.

Solar One and Solar Two...in Barstow were in operation at one time. But they were closed down....

I think they were experimental...

I fully expect this new plant to be a boon doggle....

The Interior Department said in total the projects could generate as much as 2,800 megawatts of electricity,

I love the word could. What they don't tell you is that watts is a measure of power (or the rate of energy conversion). This means those 2,800 megawatts is only a peak value. That is it's produced only when the sun shines at a peak level. That's a small amount of time on the best of day. So this plants will produce nearly 0 output for the majority of the time. That's right nearly 0 output. You don't get any power when it's dark. By contrast Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power plant produces 2,300 megawatts 24/7 with over 93% up time. And the time that Diablo goes down is scheduled. Only a country gone stark raving MAD would invest so much money in a boondoggle like this. Note that private money would NEVER pony up the funds for something like this. Only government can be this stupid and wasteful.

More details:

Luz Power Tower

****************************************************

BrightSource Energy’s proprietary Luz Power Tower (LPT) 550 energy system is based on proven power tower technology and is designed to offer the highest operating efficiencies and lowest capital costs in the industry.

BrightSource Energy’s decision to use a power tower design stems from its engineering team’s experience designing and building the nine Solar Electric Generating Stations (SEGS) in California between 1984 and 1990. These nine plants still represent more than 80 percent of the commercial solar thermal energy produced in the U.S. today. While built durably, the SEGS plants’ trough technology has efficiency and cost limitations that are solved during the evolution to the LPT system. The benefits of the LPT design include:

The result is a large-scale solar system that reliably delivers solar energy at a cost competitive with fossil fuels.

Heliostats Thousands of mirrors track the sun in two dimensions and reflect the sunlight to a boiler filled with water atop a tower.

Optimization Software

Proprietary optimization software coordinates the movement of the heliostats to maximize the collection of the sun's energy and concentrate the sunlight onto the boiler. Tower & Boiler The boiler sits atop the tower and converts the concentrated energy of the sun into superheated steam up to 550 degrees Celcius. The steam then efficiently moves down the tower and to the power block at its base. Power Block Inside the power block, the steam turns a high efficiency traditional steam turbine to create electricity. The electricity is then connected to the grid for consumption. The pertinent statistics:

$6 billion project

proposed 392 megawatt (MW) solar power facility

The proposed project would occupy about 4,000 acres

If these figures are correct, this thing is a huge loser from the get-go. How many 4,000 MW Nuclear Plants could you build for that kind of money on that kind of acreage?

Desert...is what I call it.

LOL!!

I think if you plug in Solar, Barstow...in Google search...you will get Solar One and Solar Two.

Nevertheless you are correct..........
