Hartzler explains responses to attack ads, 'negative campaigning' in book

(Oct. 25, 2010) — U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton’s campaign has been running advertisements accusing his Republican challenger, former State Rep. Vicky Hartzler, of being “way too nasty.” At a Pulaski County Republican Party event, Hartzler said Skelton’s campaign ads made her “look like the Antichrist.” While Hartzler has strongly protested what she views as misleading and sometimes outright false attacks by Ike Skelton, it’s not the first time she’s been a target of negative campaigning. In her book, “Running God’s Way; Step by Step to a Successful Political Campaign,” she recounts an experience in her 1996 re-election campaign when her mother called to report an attack ad delivered by direct mail comparing her to a pig feeding off lobbyist money, and outlines what she sees as the most effective response to attacks.
