Sephardi leader Yosef: Non-Jews exist to serve Jews

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israeli Sephardic leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef in his weekly Saturday night sermon said that non-Jews exist to serve Jews.

“Goyim were born only to serve us. Without that, they have no place in the world; only to serve the People of Israel,” he said during a public discussion of what kind of work non-Jews are allowed to perform on Shabbat.

"Why are gentiles needed? They will work, they will plow, they will reap. We will sit like an effendi and eat," he said to some laughter.

Yosef, the spiritual leader of the Shas Party and the former chief Sephardi rabbi of Israel, also said that the lives of non-Jews are protected in order to prevent financial loss to Jews.

"With gentiles, it will be like any person: They need to die, but God will give them longevity. Why? Imagine that one’s donkey would die, they’d lose their money. This is his servant. That’s why he gets a long life, to work well for this Jew,” said the rabbi, who recently turned 90.

An audio recording of some of the rabbi's remarks was broadcast on Israel's Channel 10.

The American Jewish Committee condemned the rabbi's remarks in a statement issued Monday.

"Rabbi Yosef’s remarks -- suggesting outrageously that Jewish scripture asserts non-Jews exist to serve Jews -- are abhorrent and an offense to human dignity and human equality,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "Judaism first taught the world that all individuals are created in the divine image, which helped form the basis of our moral code. A rabbi should be the first, not the last, to reflect that bedrock teaching of our tradition."

I'm sick of this Middle East fundamentalist BS.

Likewise. It's all primitive tribalism.

“Father, why did God make Gentiles?”

“Son, somebody has to pay retail.”

(Our pastor could use that joke, since he started life Jewish!)

There's nothing quite like Biblical ignorance to justify anything you want.

How do you say “Rabbi Ovadia Yosef is a horse’s ass” in Hebrew?

When a Jewish guy decides to assimilate, he often changes his family name. George Soros's daddy adopted the future tense of the Esperanto verb sori -- to soar -- as their new surname.

According to the scientific community upon the discovery of DNA is it literally impossible for all God's children to have come from 'the' Adam and Eve.

Wow. Anytime I want to know what the Torah really teaches the first place I go to is the "scientific community." No, really. [/sarcasm]

There is NO record of Cain having a twin sister but a twin brother Able which Cain murdered.

You obviously don't know anything about the Oral Tradition, and you wouldn't believe it if your "scientists" told you not to anyway, would you?

Genesis 4:17-23 does indeed give Cain's genealogy, but Genesis 5 gives 'the' Adam's genealogy, and the names are curiously similar but they are not the same.

You're not thinking very deeply, are you?

Genesis 5 gives Adam's descendants through Seth who was born over a hundred years later. Cain's descendants are also descendants of Adam because Cain was Adam's son. See how that works?

There is an opinion that the Na`amah of Genesis 4:22 became Noach's wife. I didn't make that up. Talk to the hand (or your "scientists").

Now why would I rely on ‘oral tradition’ when I can read for myself the WORD Moses was instructed to pen.... maybe the oralist don't like what Moses was instructed to pen... the scientific community notwithstanding.

“I’m sick of this Middle East fundamentalist BS.”

So was Titus Flavius Vespasianus.

Wow. You're an Evangelical Protestant but you subject the Bible to the word of the "scientific community." Are there any more like you?

Since the instructions for intercalating the Jewish calendar are not written down in the Bible, I guess the calendar by which all the Biblical holidays are dated is "unscriptural" too. After all, everything that Israel needed to know had to be written down in the text, didn't it? Otherwise it would be so unfair to all those Protestants trying to "get saved."

Moses penned Genesis and etc., long before flesh man discovered DNA and what information it contains... All the 'scientific community' did was to verify that Moses was inspired to put into the WORD.

I don't do or take polls on how many more there are like me, but you sure do ask a curious question? What do you care IF there are more like me.... The Heavenly Father is in control and He allows and even foretold what would take place and we are right on cue. Psalms 22 come to mind as to what some would say to fulfill Scripture...

Your ridicule exposes your tradition. As far as GOD's calender He set the sun to know the seasons.

Questions about the jubilee year are part of Shemitta. The FR expert on that is Carrie Okie who happens to have an internet book called Shemitta: For The Land Is Mine.

As it happens one of Israel’s top scholars on that part of the Old testament did discuss the book with the author in detail. Rav Moore’s comment “fascinating” - repeated many times.

Google it, you will like it.

PS Rav Moore would be totally underwhelmed with the “Rabbinical theory” advanced by Rabbi Yovadia Yosef.

Actually, I did not post this article into Front Page news, and I have no idea why it is there. Some other poster must have added it.

Dozens of articles on this topic come up, on any news search about Judaism and religious debates - one does not have to look, it flies up at you.

Many. The many of the Protestant reformers were great champions of logic and scientific method. Sometimes to excess, but more often to great effect.

“Vespasianus was scum”

Autocrats tend to be. But Vespasianus did happen to be among the more militarily competent ones. Certainly more so than Antiochus Epiphanes. Or perhaps some other factor was at work.
