To start with, Mexican-Americans have never been monolithic. This is a very wise political move on their part. But when you ask them what they care about, it does not look good for either Obama or the left.

Like everyone else, they are very aware of high unemployment, and are distrustful of policies that may cause even higher unemployment.

Next, they have a greater understanding of the near civil war going on in Mexico right now. They, like most Mexican citizens, still remember their last bloody civil war, and they are deeply opposed to another one. This puts them on the side of law and order.

Mexican Americans are even very split on the idea of stricter border controls. Many are strongly in favor of them, for several reasons. Many, especially those with family still in Mexico, want at least the option of their families coming north. But again, the cartel wars are making the north of Mexico so dangerous even for border crossers, that it is becoming intolerable.

Then, Mexican-Americans also have America only issues that are far more mundane. But here as well, they are split like the rest of the country in how to deal with them.

The last Mexican civil war was 1911-1914. How many Mexican-Americans do you think remember that? What they remember is that the leftist PRI ruled for a couple of generations and the economy was stagnant for whole lifetimes and no progress was made for sixty years under the heavy hand of Obama-type government.

Many of them at least just might be ready to listen.
