An American military legal adviser told helicopter crew that Iraqi men were valid targets as they could not surrender to aircraft, the documents show.
The Apache helicopter killed the two insurgents after being told that they were still legitimate targets even although they were offering to lay down their arms.

I hope people don't get upset that I posted this story. I don't care if they put down their weapons...the assessment was correct...they can't surrender to a helicopter...hell, I'm sure a lot of people would surrender if they had an Apache Gunship to go up against. I'm glad they took out the SOBs..

Beat the drum: these documents came right from the White House.

I’ve been going through the documents and the only thing that is shocking is that people think the documents are shocking.
It is war, not a land of unicorns, faeries, and rainbows. War is dirty and brutal.

Was is all about killing people and breaking things in order to gain a victor...any other assumption of purpose is pure folly.

I hope people don't get upset that I posted this story. It's news so it ought to be discussed. The rest of the world is publishing it so it makes no sense to ignore it.

I’m ok with it too. Besides, some people say the liberation costs too much. This is a cost-efficient move compared to taking prisoners.

Agreed. I’m sure people like Victor Davis Hanson will remind them of that and put it into it’s proper context.

The amazing thing is that the gunship called a lawyer! Been there, done that, but didn’t ask a lawyer.

Yep, good kill, whether the law says so or not. If they were carrying weapons, they were up to no good, and therefore needed to go.

They shouldn’t have been “insurgents” in the first place. If they hadn’t been, this never would have happened....

There has never been a requirement to accept a surrender from an enemy combatant.

So, what’s the problem?
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that helicopter could not land and take them prisoner, because it might be a trap.
That is exactly the kind of thing that Muslim terrorists could be expected to do.
And it wouldn’t make sense to let them go, so they could run around murdering more innocent people.
Tough luck. If you want to be a murdering terrorist, then you take your chances.

Eh...When the West and Islamists battled it out during the battles of yore i.e. Lepanto, they catapulted the heads of the captured enemies at each other and used POWs to row their fleets.

It is war, not a land of unicorns, faeries, and rainbows. War is dirty and brutal. A pretty tame one, comparatively.
Used to be we'd whack whole areas and infrastructures, population be damned.
Unicorns are still pretty cool though.
