Back in 1966 in downtown Manhattan they were already recording songs about heroin addiction, domination and the other seamy aspects of "trendy, enlightened" culture.

That was before the Left Coasters and the limeys came out with all their happy-clappy, LSD-expands-your-consciousness, let's-join-hands, peace-and-love-and-flowers music.

Musically, the hippies were already walking corpses before they held their first "love-in." VU and Dylan had already leapfrogged them by about 30 years.

VU were also “happy” about the cliche “summer of love” when everyone was writing a sappy song about heading to San Francisco. It made all of the gullible joiners leave and head West while they also noticed the bottom feeding dope dealers heading Westward to prey on the happy hunting grounds.

Cleared the air for what they were into.
