Fox hands [Juan] Williams $2 million contract

Fox News moved swiftly to turn the controversy over Juan Williams’s firing to its advantage, offering him an expanded role and a new three-year contract Thursday morning in a deal that amounts to nearly $2 million, Matea Gold reports.

Roger Ailes took a jab at NPR in the process.

"Juan has been a staunch defender of liberal viewpoints since his tenure began at Fox News in 1997,” he said in a statement. “He’s an honest man whose freedom of speech is protected by Fox News on a daily basis.”

In his new role, Williams will appear more frequently on the network and have a regular column on FoxNews.com.

I always thought that Britt Hume had a huge impact on Juan. Maybe that trend can continue.

I wonder if perhaps his conservative wife of many years and his politically active conservative son might have rubbed a bit also. ;o)

Just saw him on O’Reilly. He’s always been sensitive and you could see in his eyes how hurt he is right now. I OFTEN disagreed with him on issues, but always liked and respected him as a person, his reasonable manner and his integrity.

Just when I get irritated with Bill O, he once again proves to be a stand-up guy, just as he’s been with Glenn Beck.

I wish Juan well, as he’ll not only add nicely to the fair and balanced aspect of FNC, but it’s a great career change for him (not to mention nicer $$$:-)

It’s also brought the Soros manipulation to the fore in the process, which is so good. As many of us predicted, he’s now calling for the firing of Mara Liason from NPR.

I pray the repubs will gain congressional control, and all those now publicly calling for NPR defunding will remember and follow through. I’m sure at least a couple of them will. They also need to specify not just direct government funds and grants, they need to name indirect taxpayer funding such as National Endowment for the Arts and other significant such donors.

You can’t lump them all together, such as the mention of Keith, Rachel, Ed et al.

Juan is a moderate compared to them and a gentleman who can be reasoned with. I’m seen him both consider the other side’s arguments and even concede fairly often.

Aw, come on. What’s more fun - and more effective - is seeing the very smart conservatives out-reason the (relatively few) liberal pinheads. It’s what sets FNC apart from (and well above) all other networks - they have the courage, strength and intelligence to feature both sides.

Well, it’s possible, and has happened before. Two outspoken guys I really respect, Bernard Goldberg and David Horowitz, were self-confessed liberals for years (DH was raised in a Communist family and has written/talked about it), but they saw the light and are wonderful voices of conservatism now.

Pray the same for Juan.

Oh, amen to that. From what I’ve been reading (and now seeing), he’s not a team player in the FNC family, is jealous and disparaging (off camera) of Glenn Beck, vain and just plain snarky.

Exactly. Juan is the sort of liberal I would feel comfortable having a realistic discussion with. He is the sort of liberal that could actually make me think about the other side of the coin, and have an honest debate with.

He oozes with integrity, which is something most liberals do not. Because of this, he is the antithesis of what being a progressive is today.

He is the square peg in the round hole when it comes to others on the left, and for this, he was canned. His honesty and integrity have no place amongst the liberal crowd. Instead of being a role-model, someone who could be a voice for their side, they tore him down.

This is how far the left has gone. The media continually talks about how the TEA partiers are extreme, which we all know is a joke. The fact is, the left is so extreme, that even someone like Juan is no longer welcome at their table. Hell, they’d probably be demanding JFK resign for his religious beliefs, and because he was a warmonger.

I’m happy for Juan. He’s a likable liberal, and FNC will be a nice professional home for him. I like when he gets that look on his face when he’s the lone man in a debate. He looks lost. He had that look on his face tonight when he was on The Factor. Only he looked sad. It’s like he doesn’t know what hit him. Betrayal hurts. It happened to me at a job 22 years ago, and I still remember feeling so awful that my friends did what they did.

Williams currently has the support of both liberals and conservatives. I believe the liberal support will end when they catch wind of this.

It’s not that we agree with Juan on most issues any more now than then, but he’s not the enemy. He’s a decent guy and he got royally screwed by truly diabolical, powerful leftists.

It’s the principle of it. He was a casualty in a serious war between good and evil. Next time it may well be someone we DO agree with...or us.

A lot of BB is schtick. He’s a lib, but again, a decent person. Tonight on Hannity, he was outraged about what NPR did, and truly shocked at the clip they showed of Nina Totenberg praying Jesse Helms and his family would get AIDS - he’d never been aware of that and condemned it and NPR, saying he wouldn’t donate to it again “in honor of Juan”.

I’ve said nice things about him before. I’ve said he’s not a race-baiter and that’s refreshing coming from a black rat. I’ve also said I like his personality and he’s a genuinely nice person. I agree with almost nothing he says, but I think he’s got a good soul, and I’ve stuck up for him before on here and I’ve seen a few others also do so.

I hope you’re right and that he doesn’t have a short memory just because this is the story of the day. He’ll be gone tomorrow “on assignment” and Juan’s filling in for him. Yeah, I’d love to see him pursue this, because there’s plenty to pursue - the bigger picture with Soros and more. Hopefully his growing exposure to Beck and their friendship will educate him and motivate him to continue this important fight.
