IIRC the door was unlocked, and the good Dr. was napping on the couch. they beat him with baseball bats, hogtied him, and threw hiim in the basement. over time he was able to free himself, where the only sane option available to him was to go to the neighbors and call police.

He's got nothing to lose, and no jury would convict summary justice at the end of a rope in the street outside the jail.

The police and prosecutors would have a hissy fit over a couple of their meal tickets getting snuffed out, but I think they'd lose the argument with the public, unless Connecticut is so far gone that the citizens are all b*itches of the Almighty State.
