SAN FRANCISCO -- Democrat Jerry Brown has broken open the dead-heat contest for California governor, leading Republican Meg Whitman by 8 points going into the final two weeks of the campaign after massing robust backing from Latinos and eclipsing her support in the crucial Central Valley, a new Public Policy Institute of California poll shows.
In the first major nonpartisan survey since a series of statewide televised debates and revelations of Whitman's hiring and firing of an undocumented Mexican immigrant maid, Brown has 44 percent of likely voters to 36 percent for Whitman, with 16 percent undecided and other candidates drawing 4 percent, the poll showed.
That marks a significant shift in the race after months of being virtually tied. The last poll by the organization, in September, showed Whitman leading Brown 38-37 percent. The new poll of 2,002 adults, was taken Oct. 10-17, a period that included the candidates' third debate. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

16% Undecided or 16% Stoned?
Gross over generalization. The southern half of the state is more like Florida than it is like Massachusetts. Don’t lump us So Cals in with those No Cal liberals
I do admit, there is no shortage of human debris here.
Can’t believe those idiots are threatening to elect Governor Moonbeam again.
How could they forget what a disaster he was?
16% with their heads up their @sses
The party break down in this poll is 45 Dem 31 Rep, a difference of 14 points.
While that is the party breakdown in California in 2008,
in the last 2 mid-term elections, the party breakdown was a difference of 9.4 in 2002, and 8.2 in 2006.
I seriously doubt the party breakdown this year will be any worse than a +8 or +9 for the Dems.
That means this poll gave the Democrats about 5-6 points more than they should.
Adjust it and you have Boxer/Fiorina in a tie and Whitman right there with Jerry Brown.
California Republicans are fed up with the party “leadership” and have been losing a lot of registered voters who have chosen to become “independent” or “decline to state”. However, that doesn’t mean that they’ll turn into liberals and vote Democrat.
I did an analysis a couple years ago that showed that the DTS voters voted roughly in the same ratio as D’s to R’s. Given the loss of registered pubbies, I would expect that those DTS ratios would show the growth on the R side of the equation (moving more toward your numbers).
“Democrat Jerry Brown has broken open the dead-heat contest for California governor...”
I dunno. I remember the newsies reported Carter was 11% points ahead of Reagan in 1980. Then, like now, they are trying to depress the conservative/ republican turnout with engineered polling. Just pull your random sample out of the Berkley, California phone book to get the numbers you want - and you can still call it a scientific poll.
The US bailing out California?
It would be one of the last things the US ever did.
Republican Congress. If they can survive the free MSM 24/7 ad blitz for Democrats. Should de-fund California and let them stew in their own juices for 2 years. They may have a change of mind. The Rat media is ready with its all out attack.
Unfortunately, the fact that the SEIU provides the staff which counts absentee ballots, that the sec of of state is an SEIU Dem, means that California has elections which tell next to nothing about voter’s intentions. Only the complete bankruptcy of the state and a fed which doesn’t make other states pay for the flagrant thievery of state govt. officials is likely to change this. Local operatives will prepare the public for the unexpected win by a the old Ruling Class by running stories like this. The public doesn’t know and government doesn’t want it to, that there is no audit trail for voting. That ended with paper ballots. This corruption of the foundation of representative government inevitably leads to financial failure, and probably to violence as the majority, depending upon transfer payments, finds that the system is bankrupt. It is, but the statists still control elections, and did even before Acorn.
Brown only has 44% of the vote with many undecided. Whitman will pull this out by 1% - 2%.
I find it hard to believe that you are telling me that there is massive fraud in the voting system in Ca. and nobody has stepped up to expose it when they have been involved? Do you know how much money someone could make by selling that story to the LA times or whomever. I still believe that our votes count or why are we even trying?
The harsh truth for “Greece On The Pacific” aka. California is that decades of bad policies, Labor Union domination of the State Government and entitlement mentality has wrecked the state. Small Business is closing shop and leaving. The delusional Dem voters keep voting in bad policy. They are in denial of reality.
Green Jobs means fewer jobs. It means higher business costs, less profits and more unemployment. Californians somehow believe they are exempt from market and opportunity costs. They are being clue batted about their choices and still blame their bad governance on Foggybottom and others.
Business is evil, Green initiatives and Eco groups are always right. If Calif. implodes due to its pension programs and non sustainable policies the rest of the US will also be hurt. Maybe they should consider hitting the dirt and restructuring? As they are headed toward defaults.

Well, we had better get Whitman in there then!
