I was in the Gulf of Tonkin on a tin can from 04/72 thru 10/72. We plane guarded for several of the carriers over there when we weren’t providing NGFS.

During Vietnam, Australia operated what had been its second aircraft carrier (HMAS Sydney) as a 'fast troop transport'.

As it was getting close to port, some American pilot saw it from a distance and reported an aircraft carrier approaching Vung Tau. This apparently caused a bit of consternation - the Americans knew they didn't have a carrier in the area, so whose could it be. An alert went out and a US fighter plane was dispatched to have a closer look.

He overflew the Sydney and reported back.

"I don't think we need to worry - it looks like it's about to launch a bunch of trucks at us."
